Game Appearances
The term the Hollow Forest is first brought up by Ameno-sagiri in Persona 4 who uses it to describe the TV World as a whole, calling it a Hollow Forest born from the bloated desire and lies of humans.
In Golden, Margaret brings the Investigation Team to an area that Marie has come to shut herself in and also calls it the Hollow Forest. When the group talks amongst themselves, Chie assumes it to be something born from Marie's heart. Yukiko remembers Ame saying the phrase Hollow Forest in the previous battle, as does Naoto, who recalls the explanation of the Hollow Forest being a place that Ame created in response to human desire and their hearts longing for lies. Yosuke is confused, as that would mean that the inside of Marie's heart is the same kind of Hollow forest that Ame created.
The space that Marie has confined herself within this Hollow Forest is a tomb called the Grave of Hollow Memories. As they go through each floor of the tomb, the Investigation Team sees stone paving and scattered flower petals mixed with imagery resembling places around Inaba. Namely Junes, Yasogami High School, and Souzai Daigaku. They hear Marie's poems, and Rise remarks on how sad she seems and how these poems must have certain meanings. They catch up to Marie, but she tries to distance herself from the Investigation Team. She reintroduces herself as Kusumi-no-Okami, a being similar to Ame and Kuni who was responsible for the fog in Inaba. Her human form is not her real self, but a disguise sent to spy on humans and relay back information about what they desire. The protagonist comes up with a plan to defeat the fog within Marie in order to save her. After, the Hollow Forest begins to collapse and the whole group scrambles to get out.
End of spoilers.
