On April 11th, news regarding Mayumi's affair with Namatame is being broadcast on TV in both the protagonist's home city and Inaba. When the protagonist attends his first day at Yasogami High School, students gossip about the paparazzi looking for Mayumi, and a student in another class claims that Mayumi is his soulmate. On his way home from school, the protagonist walks by a crime scene where a dead body has been found. That evening, he learns from the news that it was Mayumi. Through the news and other gossip, the protagonist also learns that while Mayumi was staying at the Amagi Inn, she had said something that stressed out Yukiko Amagi's mother, forcing Yukiko to temporarily take over managing the inn in her mother's place.

When the protagonist first enters the TV World, he and his friends discover the Desolate Bedroom which is adorned in defaced posters and a red noose hanging from the ceiling. Yosuke recognizes that the posters were of Namatame's wife and assumes that the room is related to Mayumi. The room was once Mayumi's TV World dungeon that shrunk in size following her death.[2] In May, Chie remembers the noose when she sees a red scarf being sold in Tatsumi Textiles. Kanji's Mother explains that Mayumi had ordered a pair of red scarves, but ended up only buying the woman's scarf.

In December, the Investigation Team interrogates Namatame, and he talks about his affair with Mayumi. The two met when she was interviewing an election candidate that Namatame was working under. As they were both from Inaba, Namatame found her easy to talk to, and their affair started shortly after. Namatame also recalls that when she was alive, Mayumi had been looking into a rumor about the Midnight Channel. Namatame tried watching the Midnight Channel himself on April 11th and saw an image of Mayumi in pain. He thought she might be trying to communicate with him. This experience eventually led to him kidnapping the people who appeared on TV.

On December 5th, Tohru Adachi is revealed as the murderer. He was able to get close to Mayumi when he showed up at the Amagi Inn and told the staff that he was there to protect Mayumi from the media. It is unknown if he had been sent by the police to guard her or if he was lying. In a flashback shown to the player, Mayumi meets with Adachi in the inn lobby and asks who he is and why he asked her to meet in the lobby. Adachi asks if the news about her and Namatame is true or not, himself seemingly believing that it's all a lie. Mayumi refuses to answer, which upsets Adachi. She considers calling for help, but before she can, he ends up pushing her into the large lobby TV, not knowing that whole bodies can go into the TV.
