Due to the game using the same engine as its predecessor, the gameplay is identical bar a few changes, and as such this section will only cover additional features for Ultimax that were not present in Persona 4 Arena. For a synopsis on general gameplay encompassing both versions, see the respective Gameplay section for Persona 4 Arena.

Shadow Types

Barring a few exceptions, every character in the game is given a Shadow Type (Abbreviated in the community as S.[Character]), a variation of the character they're based on. Gameplay wise, they have a near identical moveset to their base counterparts, with a few changes;

  • While returning characters gain new autocombo attacks, their Shadow counterparts retain the ones they had from P4A
  • Shadows have different base stats compared to their normal counterparts, notably 1000 extra health (With the exceptions of Kanji and Akihiko, who only gain 500) and a 10% damage reduction on all their attacks.
  • SP gain is much larger for Shadows.
  • Most variations of Burst are unavailable to Shadows, instead gaining access to Shadow Frenzy, where inputting Burst with at least 1 SP turns the SP bar into a timer and grants a myriad of benefits, including;
    • The ability to cancel any Skill or SP Skill into any Skill, SP Skill or Furious Action
    • Making all normals jump-cancelable on hit and block
    • Perform specials and supers for free, at the cost of lowering the Frenzy timer
    • Removing the opponent's ability to Reversal Burst during a Shadow Frenzy combo
    • Refilling Persona cards (even if broken) if activated with 100 SP
      • Shadow types still have access to Reversal Burst.
  • Shadows are unable to enter Awakening. However, they have access to their Awakening SP Skills at all times.
  • Shadows do not have access to Instant Kills.

S Hold

The S Hold System allows for Skills to be performed by holding A, intended for newer players who are unfamiliar with motion inputs. Attacks unleashed using this system may have different properties than if a motion input activated the Skill, such as start-up invincibility. The gauge will not charge into a Skill if the Skill requires more SP than is currently available.

S Hold
Level Charge Time Attack
Level 0 1-59F
Level 1 60-134F Gauge appears, no attack
Level 2 135-209F Skill
Level 3 210-284F SP Skill
Level 4 285-359F Awakening SP Skill
Level 5 360F Instant Kill

2022 re-release

On March 17, 2022, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax was re-released on PC, Nintendo Switch and PS4 worldwide, and later received rollback netcode on August 5th of the same year.[1] The 2022 re-release is based off of the 2.0 arcade version of the game, which was originally only released in Japan.[2] The patch features many balance changes, both to the game's core mechanics and characters' individual movesets.[3]

Most notably, the 2.0 arcade version overhauls how "Shadow Type" characters function, as they now:

  • Can use Burst.
  • Can use Shadow Frenzy even at less than 100 SP.
    • Additionally, opponents can no longer use Defensive Burst during Shadow Frenzy.
  • No longer carry over SP between rounds.

In addition, the 2022 re-release also includes all the game's previously released DLC at no additional charge. This includes the additional characters Marie, Margaret and Tohru Adachi, alternate color palettes and accessories for the playable characters, additional Navigator voices, and the story mode from the original Persona 4 Arena game.

Promotions

Purchase Bonuses (NA)

While supplies last, purchases of the game included a bonus card with a code to unlock Adachi as a fighter and get his story mode. There were 37 different cards, all featuring a character or a character's Shadow type from Arena Ultimax. Additionally, stores offered different bonus merchandise as incentives for purchasing through that store. Six of the store bonuses featured original artwork by Domerica, the animation studio that were responsible for the animated cutscenes, drawn specifically for the bonuses, which was later published in the Persona 4 The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena & The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold Super Official Design Works.

Dengeki Special Box (JP)

Dengeki released a limited edition set of merchandise that could be ordered through Atlus's Ebten shop.

Famitsu DX Pack (JP)

The Famitsu DX Pack came with clear posters and clear files. In addition to the physical merchandise, the Famitsu DX Pack also came with a downloadable code to unlock Adachi's boss battle music from Persona 4, "New World Fool", as a BGM.

The Famitsu DX Pack and the Newcomer Package could also be purchased together.

Premium Newcomer Package (JP)

The Newcomer package was aimed at fans who had not played Arena. The game came packaged in a special foil sleeve and included a download code card with art of Yu and his Shadow type drawn by Soejima.

The download code added:

  • Arena's story mode
  • Glasses accessory set
  • 12 additional BGMs from P3/P4
  • Two extra navigators (Teddie and Mitsuru)

The Newcomer Package and Famitsu DX Pack could also be purchased together.

Pre-order Bonus (NA)

North American pre-orders of the game came with an inflatable punchable Teddie and a set of tarot cards numbered 0 through 10. The 2nd half of the tarot card came with Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth. Additionally, Marie and Adachi were free for everyone during the first week of the game's release.

Trivia

  • Despite Labrys already having a Shadow variant from Persona 4 Arena as a separate playable character, Labrys also gets a Shadow Type variant in Ultimax. Despite this, both characters are distinct during gameplay, with Shabrys (The FGC term for the separate character) having a different Persona and not playing by the ST rules.
