Yasogami High School is a location in Persona 4. It is a high school located in the city of Inaba and serves a central role in the story of the game.

Profile

Yasogami High School was built in 1944, partway up Mt. Yasogami where Mt. Yasogami Castle used to stand. It was originally named Mt. Yasogami Military School and existed purely to deter the Allies from choosing Mt. Yasogami as an air raid target, thus protecting Inaba's coal mine. After the war ended, it became a regular school and has since been remodeled, though the buildings are still quite old. A fighter plane is kept on grounds to represent its time as a military facility.

By 2011, Yasogami High is a senior high school with three grades and three classes per grade. It is known by the nickname Hachikō, an alternate reading of the characters used in the school's name. Many students who graduate from the school get jobs locally within Inaba. Thus, many alums of Yasogami High work in Inaba, and being a graduate of the school gives new hires a leg up over those who attended private schools.

The school is surrounded by a moat and walls, with a long stone staircase leading from the moat up to the actual school buildings. Many students complain about the stairs, but it looks quite beautiful in the springtime when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The school consists of two main buildings: the Classroom Building and Practice Building. The Classroom Building mainly contains teaching classrooms, with three classrooms per school year. The building has three floors, each corresponding to a specific school year. For example, the second year classrooms 2-1, 2-2, and 2-3 are located on the second floor. Some auxiliary rooms, such as the faculty office and student council room, are also situated in the Classroom Building.

The Practice Building consists of two floors and is connected to the Classroom Building via a walkway on the second floor as well as a path under the walkway on the first floor. The Practice Building contains a variety of auxiliary rooms used mainly for club activities. This includes the music club room and the meeting room, used by the band and drama club respectively. At the tail end of the Showa period, when Inaba was more populated, the Practice Building used to have classrooms. However, after the closure of the coal mine caused a population decline, the classrooms in the practice building started getting converted into training classrooms, and now the school has a decent variety of facilities despite the low number of students. Other than the two main buildings, Yasogami High School also contains a gym (which doubles as the auditorium) and field, each used by the basketball club and soccer club, respectively. There is also a small baseball field.

Most of the rules at Yasogami High pertain to the dress code, though the school is fairly relaxed about student uniforms so long as the uniform is being worn. For example, there is no rule that explicitly says that a girl cannot wear a boy's uniform. Aside from the dress code, the only other rule is that you cannot ride a scooter to school, though according to Daisuke Nagase, some students do so in secret. Additionally, students are allowed to get part-time jobs so long as it does not interfere with their academics and is age-appropriate.

Because Yasogami High's cultural festival is open to people outside of the school, it is seen by the people of Inaba as something similar to the summer festival at Tatsuhime Shrine. The students know this and dream up ways to make sure that guests from outside of school enjoy the festival. Additionally, businesses are allowed to set up stalls at the school during the festival, turning it into a friendly competition of sorts.

Game Appearances

Persona 3 Portable

The female protagonist visits Yasogami High School[a] in August, 2009 for a two-day training camp if she joins the volleyball or tennis club. Ms. Kanou, the advisor for the club chosen, refers to the school as "rustic," and notes the lack of nearby clubs or convenience stores.[1]

Persona 4

Yasogami High School is one of the main settings of the story of Persona 4. The protagonist transfers to this school as a second year due to his year long stay in Inaba. The rumor about the Midnight Channel is well-known at the school, evident by how many students talk about watching it and seeing people such as Mayumi Yamano and Saki Konishi.[2][3]

The school schedules several school events throughout the year. This includes a school camping trip in June, a school field trip scheduled in September, and a school culture festival held in October. In 2011, during the events of Persona 4, the first and second year students go camping in the forest and pick up trash. Later, the first and second years visit Gekkoukan High School and the surrounding Tatsumi Port Island area as part of their field trip. Thanks to Kinshiro Morooka, the trip to Tatsumi Port Island is an educational one, much to the disappointment of Yosuke.

During the 2011 school year, the school experiences a tragedy when 3rd year student Saki Konishi is found dead. And in July, one of the teachers, Kinshiro Morooka is also found dead. When the Fog from the TV World starts entering the real world near the climax of the game, the faculty and students at Yasogami High School are also affected, with rumors of students falling ill and even fainting.

Persona 4 Arena

In May of 2012, the Investigation Team and the Shadow Operatives enter the TV World and find a version of Yasogami High that has been plastered in ads for the P-1 Grand Prix. Additionally, they meet a girl in a uniform named Labrys who says she is the student council president.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax

Following the events of Arena, the Investigation Team and Shadow Operatives undergo something similar to the Dark Hour where an unknown culprit is attempting to merge the TV World into Inaba. Like how Gekkoukan High School turned into Tartarus during the Dark Hour, Yasogami High turns into a strange tower which serves as a setting for Arena Ultimax.

Nomenclature

Yasogami comes from the legend of the Hare of Inaba, which gives names to multiple locations around Inaba. Okuninushi's brethren are collectively called the Yasogami in the tale. Although the kanji used for Yaso, 八十, means "Eighty", it is more accurately understood as a metaphorical term referring to an innumerable number of gods.
