The protagonist goes to the library with his girlfriend, Kumiko Hatano, where she checks out a book by Michio Azuma in the protagonist's name. The protagonist then goes to obtain tickets for a concert when he is attacked by demons and saved by a man named Kyouji Kuzunoha. Unable to receive the tickets, he goes to meet up with Kumiko at the Afro Tea House, but she is not there. While there, he hears on the news that Kyouji Kuzunoha has been killed. Upon leaving, he is confronted by a man named Sid Davis, who, looking to acquire Azuma's book, kidnaps the protagonist and murders him. At the Sanzu River, the ferryman Charon says that it was not yet the protagonist's time to die, but he cannot return him to his own body, so he puts the protagonist into the body of Kyouji. Now, the protagonist must take jobs as a Devil Summoner in Kyouji's place.
