Lilith is a female being in Jewish tradition, and the name is used in Isaiah 34:14 to refer either to a night demon or a nocturnal animal. The term likely derives from Babylonian (cf. the Assyrian lilîtu).[1] The modern idea of Lilith first appeared in the possibly satirical text Alphabet of Sirach, in which Lilith was the first wife of Adam before Eve, but she refused to submit to her husband; she brings sickness to infants.

Design

Lilith has three primary designs. With the first by Kazuma Kaneko, Lilith appears as a nude woman with three fingers and toes on each hand or foot, reptilian yellow eyes, long black hair, wearing nothing but a silver snakeskin wrapped around her body, and has a snake resembling a member of the Boidae family wrapped around her in a similar fashion as a feather boa. This design is the primary one used throughout the series at large.

Her second design appeared in Shin Megami Tensei IV and was designed by guest artist Keita Amemiya. She has the stomach, chest, and face from the lip up of a human, all colored white, however the rest of her is a mixture of insectoid and bird-like. She has three insect-like arms with bird talons, two on her right and one on her left, a spiked wing emerging from her left shoulder, a long thing tail covered in barbs and thorns, and her legs resemble the jaws of a beetle with eyes over her knees. A mixture of wings and horns erupt from her head, and between her human face and chest is a maw of sharp teeth and mandibles. This design is currently exclusive to Shin Megami Tensei IV.

The third design debuted in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance and was designed Masayuki Doi. This design takes inspiration from the original design by Kazuma Kaneko, incorporating many of its elements. She is a white-skinned woman covered in grey craters across her arms, legs, and waist, and has black markings on her shoulders and breasts. Her hair has been changed to pink with an ornate snake headdress, and she had sharp black angel wings shared by all members of the Qadištu along with black feathers on her shoulders. As with Kaneko's design, she is accompanied by a snake, though in this design no longer resembles a real snake being bright red and having a striped black tongue.

Shin Megami Tensei

Lilith first appears under the identity as the young woman Yuriko, which she assumes to pursue the Hero in an effort to tempt him towards chaos. Initially she appears to him in his dream, found bathing in a spring, and claims that she is his eternal partner. Yuriko meets with the Hero several other times throughout his early adventure, each time cryptically commenting on their fated encounters and encouraging him on his battles before mysteriously vanishing again. Through following the Hero, Yuriko locates the Heroine and kidnaps her. She attempts to have the Heroine publicly executed for her role in defying Gotou as the Resistance leader, but is interrupted by the Hero's arrival. Unfazed, Yuriko swears that she would have left the Heroine alone had he chosen her as his partner instead, and summons a group of demons to attack the party. She quickly flees after her plans are thwarted.

Following the Great Cataclysm, Yuriko approaches the Hero again at Roppongi after the defeat of Belial, asking for the Gushing Jar used to seal the demon. If refused, she casts Shibaboo on the party and escapes with the jar anyway. While at Ueno, the Hero yet again reunites with her through Louis Cyphre. Yuriko laments over her failure to separate the Hero from the Heroine, and in her dejected frustration, reveals her true identity as Lilith with the intent on killing him. However, she is unable to find the resolve to follow through and reverts back to her human form, bidding the Hero farewell before leaving the group behind.

Afterwards, Lilith assumes the identity of Rie and accompanies the Chaos Hero as his partner. He introduces her to the party when they reunite at Tokyo Destinyland, though Rie herself remains silent. The encounter, albeit brief, leaves the Heroine suspicious about her. The pair are later re-encountered in the Basilica, where the Chaos and Law Heroes argue while Rie quietly stands by. Following Tokyo's flooding, the next events diverge based on the Hero's Alignment.

In the Chaos route, the party find Chaos Hero and Rie in the Bascilia's sanctum. She silently follows him into its basement to find Asura. The party later catches up to them, when Rie steps forward and reveals her true from as Lilith. She bids her final goodbye to the Hero, upset at her failures to claim him, and leaves for the final time afterwards.

In the Law and Neutral routes, Rie follows the Chaos Hero into the Bascilia's basement. She becomes infuriated when the party kills him and transforms into her true form Lilith, this time no longer holding herself back as she attacks the Hero, but is defeated.

Regardless of the route taken, Lilith laments over how she and the Hero were supposed to become the new Adam and Eve. She leaves the Gushing Jar behind as she departs.

Visionaries

Lilith's other identities are featured in three Visionary cutscenes in the Game Boy Advance and iOS versions of the game.

In "Snake Charm", Louis Cyphre assigns Lilith to coerce the Hero toward chaos. Although doubtful if her charm will reach him, she accepts and pledges to visit the Hero as Yuriko in his dreams.

In "Black Moon", Yuriko is forced by Louis Cyphre to give up on pursuing the Hero after continuously failing to seduce him. Instead, he orders her to accompany the Chaos Hero for his stronger ambition for power. Yuriko is unable to respond, but resigns herself to his demands.

In "Idol Shard", Lilith as Rie is introduced to the Chaos Hero by the Gaean Founder.
