Ideo Hazama is a character in Shin Megami Tensei if....

Profile

The main antagonist of Shin Megami Tensei if..., Hazama was once a normal high school student, but after being ostracized, he used the Demon Summoning Program to aid him in his quest for power to get revenge on the people from his school. He and the Expanse denizens call him the "Deity Emperor" after he takes over his school and the Tower of Confinement (originally called the Tower of Infinity until he took over). As revenge, he transports his school to the Expanse and punishes the people from his school in dungeons themed after the 7 Deadly Sins, with the exception of Lust.

As the Deity Emperor, Hazama uses wa/ware (我) and watashi (私) to refer to himself. In flashback sequences depicting his original self as a normal human, he uses boku in hiragana (ぼく). During his breakdown after being defeated in Reiko's route, he starts out with ware (我) when referring to himself, then he switches to watashi (私), and then finally switches back to boku (ぼく) to refer to himself again.

In the PlayStation version, he uses the kanji version of boku (僕) as a teenager and the hiragana version of boku (ぼく) as a young child. So during his breakdown sequence in the PlayStation version, he starts out with ware (我), then switches to watashi (私), then switches to the kanji version of boku (僕), and then switches to the hiragana version of boku (ぼく). After Reiko helps him, he goes back to using the kanji version of boku (僕) again.

Hazama's name in the text box also changes in the story. He's called "Deity Emperor" in the text boxes throughout most of the game, but in his flashbacks and after Reiko helps him, he's called "Ideo" in the text boxes.

In Hazama Hen, Hazama uses boku (僕) to refer to himself, and he uses kono boku (この僕) mid-game. Near the end of the game, he switches to watashi (私), which is after the ordeal with Amon and defeating Angra Mainyu, and then he uses ware (我) at the very end as he calls himself the Deity Emperor.

His astral projection is rainbow in the Super Famicom version and blue in the PlayStation version.

He wears a white gakuran (学ラン) style uniform. In this case, it would be called a shiroran (白ラン) because it's white instead of the traditional black or navy, unlike the other Karukozaka students, who wear blazers which are supposed to be more modern.

Hazama was "bullied," but bullying in Japanese is called "ijime" and may carry slightly different connotations.

• While ijime can occur between individuals, it is often group-based, particularly within an established social circle, and commonly includes, but isn't limited to:
  • Ostracization from said social circle, like friends or schoolmates, and may involve multiple members of the entire class as participants or bystanders, and may include pretending the victim isn't there or doesn't exist.

• Whereas bullying doesn't need to be group-based, could be an outsider doing the bullying, and English students more often don't know the bully well compared to ijime, which is more strongly tied to schoolmates or friends.

Hazama first appears to the Protagonist in a dream, introducing himself as someone who used to be an ordinary human but is now known as the Deity Emperor. He continues, everyone's fates lie in the palm of his hand so they had better entertain him.

He appears again through his astral projection after the Protagonist obtains the Demon Summoning Program, taunting them for trying to escape the prediciment he has placed them in. He says the weak Ideo Hazama is no more and now there is only the powerful Deity Emperor. He says it only took a fraction of his power to drag the school into the Expanse and that it's pointless trying to escape, but he then decides to give a hint and says there is something in the gym that might help the Protagonist escape if they go there.

Hazama also taunts the Protagonist throughout the game through statues in each dungeon, typically at the beginning. Exceptions to this are his first appearance to the Protagonist in Karukozaka High, and in Hazama's Psyche dungeon, where five visions can be viewed. In most of these appearances, barring those in Hazama's Psyche, he tells the Protagonist about what he has done in the current dungeon, and why he did it. In the visions shown in Hazama's Psyche, the Protagonist is shown key moments in Hazama's life that pivoted him towards his evil.

Hazama serves as the final boss of the game, but where he is fought to end the game varies based on which partner the Protagonist chose in the start of the game. If they picked Yumi or Shinji, he is fought in Karukozaka High, and the game ends there. However, if the Protagonist picked Reiko, they gain access to Hazama's Psyche dungeon after defeating him at Karukozaka High, where he can be truly defeated. On Akira's route, Hazama is fought in a throne room at the top of the Tower of Confinement.

Early on, the Protagonist can hear stories about Hazama, like:

• it's mentioned that Hazama hasn't been seen for 2–3 days.

• A student from a sports club will say Hazama is crazy for messing with demons and black magic.

• A female student will mention she saw Hazama in the hallway and he was glowing.

In the three main routes, after the Protagonist meets Hazama's astral projection in the school, he'll tell them they might be able to escape if they head to the gymnasium. Then after heading there and defeating a boss (Melusine if the Protagonist is male and Faun if the Protagonist is female), the Protagonist finds the Ring of Humility. Hazama will mockingly praise the Protagonist and tell them the ring they found will break a seal and if they want to escape they have to break all the seals. He then directs them towards the emergency exit where they'll eventually find a temple-like area called the Chamber of Seals that contains entrances to worlds themed after the 7 deadly sins. If the Protagonist is with Reiko, she will mention it's just like Hazama to build a something like this that is similar to a temple.

In the World of Pride, Hazama appears to the Protagonist and their partner through a statue and he reprimands them for thinking they could try to do everything on their own. It's very prideful of them and eventually they'll see how powerless they really are. Then the statue crumbles.

Expanse residents will mention various things here like how other people from the other side have been entering the World of Pride, and the Deity Emperor split up the Expanse into these sin worlds, and the town in the World of Pride used to be located near the Chamber of Seals until the Deity Emperor moved it.

When facing Vine, he'll mention the Deity Emperor told him to hold back but he thinks he'd crush the Protagonist no matter how much he holds back. After he is defeated, the Protagonist gains the Ring of Temperance.

If the Protagonist goes back to the school, they can hear more stories from the students like:

• female student will mention that despite being known for being "dark," Hazama was popular with some girls for his cynical (ニヒル) personality.

• A male student will say he thinks Hazama intends to kill them all.

• A female student will mention she thinks the Deity Emperor title suits Hazama.

Then in the World of Gluttony, another statue of Hazama appears, where he comments on Vine's defeat and tells the Protagonist and their partner they have some backbone. Then he says that humans are such insatiable creatures and continue to eat even if they've had enough to stave off starvation, and he says that the worst person in the school is kept in this world, the principal, who he turned into a pig. The statue crumbles afterwards.

After the Protagonist defeats Parasite and gains the Ring of Diligence, Hazama teleports most the students and school staff, excluding Kayama, to the World of Sloth, to dig in this world as punishment for their laziness. He speaks through another statue, where he says humans are lazy creatures and finds it ridiculous they call themselves the epitome of the animal kingdom. He says the people of the school are terrible for trying to hide in the school and doing nothing while hoping someone would save them. Then the statue crumbles. He puts a "deal" in place that promises that whoever is the first to find the ring in this world would get to go home, but he calls it off after the Protagonist finds the ring and claims they found it through foul play.

In Charlie's route exclusively, in the World of Wrath, he taunts the Protagonist, Charlie, and Ryuichi, with Akiko, and he promises he'll let her go if they fulfill his requests.

• The first is to retrieve the megaton sphere and bring it to him, but the Protagonist will find out that no human can pick it up so they have to get a good enough demon to retrieve it.
• The second is to kill Otsuki, who Hazama said was useless and only wished to gain Hazama's favor.
• The third is to to worship a statue of himself and then return.

Then after Hazama starts making a fourth request, Ryuichi butts in after getting sick of the unending requests, but then he is taken by Hazama, who then turns him and Akiko both into statues. He tells the Protagonist and Charlie that they might be able to save them if they destroy the statues, but trying to do so results in the statues breaking and them both crumbling to dust. He then mocks the party for rushing into it too quickly because their wrath got the better of them.

He is then faced in the school after the party is warped there. After he is defeated, he lets the party go home but he remains in the Expanse to continue doing what he wants, and that's the end of Charlie's route. Charlie ponders what Hazama might be up to now.

The ending text crawl plays out and it says the school and several students vanished. It was officially reported as a gas leak explosion, and there was an uproar about it for a while but it was eventually forgotten. Only a few students survived, and one tried to tell the tale but only tabloids would report it. It's pondered if the Deity Emperor was truly defeated, and then it's mentioned the survivors tried their best to live their lives in the face of wondering if the boundary between the worlds would collapse again. It ends: "if..."

In Yumi's and Reiko's route, they continue from the World of Envy, where Hazama appears before them once again in the form of a statue and tells them that human bonds are fleeting. Then he mocks the Protagonist later for eventually getting abandoned by their partner, telling them anyone could've filled the role they had in their partner's life, it didn't have to be them, and then he wonders if the Protagonist will give up on their partner or chase after them like a lovesick puppy. After beating Lilith, Hazama mockingly praises the Protagonist for suppressing their envy with force.

Then in the World of Greed, Hazama appears through another statue, and says humans are terrible in how they desire the means to triumph over their enemies.

Then back in the school, everyone but Kayama will be gone. If the Protagonist is with Reiko, she'll mention that the school being empty is a representation of Hazama's empty soul.

When confronting him in the school, he'll say he removed everyone because they were all unnecessary.

• The sign behind Hazama when you confront him in the school says "ideals (理想).

If the Protagonist is with Reiko and went to see Kayama before this confrontation, Reiko will wonder why Kayama was left in the infirmary, to which Hazama will lose his haughty composure and tell her to shut up and dissuade the notion she thinks she knows everything about him. Then he regains his composure and the fight ensues. After he is defeated, he gets shocked he lost. And if the Protagonist is with Yumi, this is the end, and the ending text crawl will soon play.

It's mentioned Hazama was defeated and his plan was put to an end. Everyone returned to their daily lives and it was as if nothing ever happened despite there being an uproar for a while over some missing students.

But if the Protagonist is with Reiko, they'll enter his psyche with the gedatsu ring (解脱のリング).

• Gedatsu means salvation or liberation and refers to the liberation from earthly desires, and ultimately, the release from the samsara cycle of reincarnation. Aeon Genesis translated this ring as "Ring of Salvation".

Here, they'll witness various flashbacks of his.

• The first available flashback shows him say no one loves him and he doesn't love anyone.
• The second available flashback shows some students making fun of him and gossiping about him.
• The third available flashback shows him try to confide his problems to Kayama with suggestive undertones to his dialogue.
  • The terminology Hazama uses when asking Kayama to "hold him" and "console him" in Japanese are "daite kure yo!" (抱いてくれよ！) and "nagusamete kure yo!" (慰めてくれよ！).
    • The literal meanings of the root forms are "to hold/embrace" and "comfort/console," respectively.
    • It's rude to talk to a superior/sensei with this type of casual and blunt way of speaking, in this case, Kayama.
    • Both (抱く) and (慰める) also act as slang terms that refer to having sex and pleasuring others, respectively.
    • "Dakishimeru" (抱きしめる) is a more natural term to use when referring to hugging or embracing.
    • He is depicted without his gloves only while he is resting on Kayama's lap for reasons unspecified.
• The fourth available flashback shows him hand a love letter to Akiko and ask her to read it, to which she insults him after he leaves and rips it up, and then Hazama returns.
  • Hazama is called "nekura" (根暗) by Akiko. Aeon Genesis translated this term as "creepy," for reference. Nekura translates to "dark rooted" or "dark-natured". It's used to describe people who are quiet, gloomy, introverted, or anti-social. It implies the person "doesn't leave their roots" or "stays in the darkness". It generally carries a negative connotation.
    • Nekura was coined somewhere between the late 1970s and 1980. It gained popularity when an entertainer used it as a descriptor for someone who maintained a bright facade but was secretly "dark" inside. By the early-to-mid-1980s, the term was weaponized in schools, where students perceived as "nekura" were deemed as not fitting in and were stigmatized, ostracized, and bullied.
  • Akiko also mentions that she can't tell what Hazama is thinking, which is commonly said about "nekura" individuals because they don't talk to others much. For reference, Aeon Genesis omitted that part and only left in that she feels she would be affected by his personality by hanging out with him.
• The fifth flashback sequence consists of two flashbacks, in the first, Hazama cries out asking his mom not to leave him as she abandons him while carrying Reiko and taking her away as well, and in the second, Hazama is in a park with his mom and sister, with his mom explaining she didn't leave because she hated him nor his father, to which Hazama says it's fine, and then his mom tells Reiko to greet him because it's been so long since they last saw each other, but Reiko stays silent.
  • In the park flashback, the unofficial Aeon Genesis English translation has Hazama's mother say "But I'm not leaving because ～". This is a mistake. She says "But I didn't leave because ～" in Japanese. It's supposed to be past tense. She's supposed to be explaining why she left originally in the first flashback with young Hazama, not why she's currently leaving in the park scene.
• Across these flashbacks, the windows in the classroom scenes are depicted as dark in the Super Famicom version, giving a nighttime setting, but this was changed in the PlayStation version, where the windows are depicted as bright instead, giving a daytime setting.

Then Hazama appears before the Protagonist and is in disbelief they managed to trespass into his psyche, he says he won't let them lay a single finger on his superior mind and then transforms into a fetal monstrosity.

After being defeated, he expresses disbelief that he lost and starts breaking down, eventually reverting to a literal child, but then Reiko comes and holds him, promising to always stay by his side. Then he returns to his usual adolescent self and says he was a fool for never realizing Reiko was there the whole time. He stays in an embrace with Reiko and they both gasp as a light flashes and envelops them.

Then Reiko tells the Protagonist they're glad they were able to save Hazama thanks to them, and if the Protagonist is male, she'll mention that Hazama is the only irreplaceable person she has in her life and stands firmly to stay with him forever, promising to never let him repeat his past transgressions again. But since Hazama's psyche is returning to normal, the Protagonist can't stay there anymore.

Back in the school, Kayama will mention that she should've taken Hazama's plea more seriously.

Then during the ending text crawl, it's mentioned both Hazama and Reiko disappeared, and at first, the school mourned their disappearance but they were eventually forgotten, but those who knew them before had their lives forever changed because they learned the existence of demons and a separate world, and they can't live comfortably because the barriers between their world and the other one could collapse again. It ends: "if... no, not if... when..."

In Akira's route, Hazama appears to the party when they try escaping through the janitor closet manhole. He is surprised that anyone was able to make it to the Tower of Confinement. He then mocks the Protagonist and Akira and toys with them, and leaves Akira nearly dead.

• Hazama uses ～kun to refer to them here. In this context, this would fall under ingin burei or waza to teinei (insincere or sarcastic politeness), which is used to mock or act condescending towards others.

It's revealed the Tower of Confinement got its name after Hazama took over because no one could leave the tower anymore after he took over.

Hazama separated the weak from the strong and trapped them at the lowest level of the tower.

There are several stone busts of Hazama throughout the tower with inscriptions detailing his mindset on his actions, but they crumble after clearing the respective area.

At the Nomos of Heaven, Hazama appears to the Protagonist and Akira as an astral projection, and once they face him in his throne room, he says he'll serve as their entertainment now and fights them.

Once he is defeated, he is shown lying on the floor and is in disbelief he lost and says he can't be defeated, no one can beat him. Then he says he's done with the tower and disappears.

Then the text crawl plays and says Hazama was defeated. The school and several students went missing. It was officially reported as a gas leak explosion, and there was an uproar about it for a while but it was eventually forgotten. It's pondered if Hazama was truly defeated, and then mentioned if the boundary between the worlds collapsed again, the Deity Emperor could return. Anyone aware of this had no hope for the future. It ends: "if..."

Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers

Hazama is a client in the Pet Shop. When introducing himself, he exclaims that the throne of Hell is his birthright.

After completing one of his requests, he'll tell the Protagonist they have some backbone, which is a reference to a line from Shin Megami Tensei if... where he says the same thing to the Protagonist after getting to the World of Gluttony. For reference, Aeon Genesis translated this line using the word "moxie". And the official translation of Soul Hackers for the 3ds, uses the term "you aren't half bad".

Shin Megami Tensei if...: Hazama Hen

Hazama is the protagonist in Hazama Hen.

In the Flash version prologue demo, it's said that Hazama is a second-year student at Karukozaka High School, and that no one understands him, which is either due to his intellect or the unknown darkness in his heart. It's well-known that he is smart, but no student can keep up with the outlandish behavior he occasionally displays. As a result, he is envied, mocked, and ostracized. He lives a lonely daily life and knows only suffering. It's mentioned his school life is fueled purely by "hatred". One day, while facing his computer as usual, Hazama acquires a strange "Demon Summoning Program" through the network. While the vast majority of people discard the file as a prank, Hazama is fascinated by the strange title. He reads through various books and makes use of his intelligence, and ends up building a machine capable of using the program. Afterwards, he acquires occult knowledge and learns about demon summoning. It's mentioned he is either driven to break away from his daily life or by pure madness. Hazama undergoes meticulous preparation. After performing a certain ritual, he leaves his reality behind and arrives in front of a massive tower of unknown origin.

Then in any version of the game the opening starts with Hazama opening the door to the tower and the door slamming shut behind him. He was led by his curiosity to get here. Through his research, he found it was a special place, even within the Expanse. Would he be able to fulfill his wish here? Would he be able to gain the power allowing him to do what he wants to the "stupid" people at his school? With that thought in his mind, Hazama felt no fear. He scoffs and expresses delight at the challenge. He then walks towards the center of the Tower of Infinity.

Here, he meets Amon, the demon he summoned to protect him in the Expanse (魔界), then Amon joins Hazama and aids him through the tower, which is made up of different sections called Baxes.

Hazama learns through an Expanse resident, that the Tower of Infinity had its pathways sealed by the Demon King (魔王) after he took control of the tower.

Making his way through the First Bax, he finds Apaosha guarding a gate and defeats him.

Then in the Second Bax, he finds Bushyasta guarding the next gate and defeats her.

Then in the Third Bax, he finds Druj guarding the next gate and defeats her.

Then Amon says he wishes to get stronger and requests to leave for a while to train. Hazama remains silent and lets him go.

In the Fourth Bax, Hazama can find Jahi and defeat her, and eventually, he is reunited with Amon, who seems to have gotten stronger. Amon mentions that Hazama seems different now too. At the end of this Bax, they find the Demon King, Angra Mainyu, who says he thinks humans are worthless and asks the demon with Hazama if he agrees, to which Amon remains silent.

After defeating Angra Mainyu, Hazama wonders why he hasn't become all-powerful yet, to which Amon replies that there must be more to the tower.

Hazama finds a way to progress higher, to the Bax of Heaven. There, he has several flashbacks:

• The first involves students gossiping about Hazama, calling him creepy, saying they can't tell what he's thinking, wondering why he comes to school, wondering if he has a girl he likes, saying they've never seen him change his expression, and finding him strange for getting perfect scores but then handing in a blank sheet and getting a zero.
• The second involves Otsuki talking to Hazama, implying he phrases things oddly, asking for his opinion on plasma saying it is the answer to everything, saying demons don't exist, saying science is about experimentation, and then telling Hazama he may go.
• The third involves Hazama meeting Kayama with her telling him she's heard of him and wishes him luck.
• The fourth involves Hazama's mother apologizing for leaving him all alone and explaining why she left the household and that it wasn't because she hated him or his father.
• The fifth involves Kayama asking Hazama if he's okay, saying he looks pale, he shouldn't stay cooped up in his room studying all the time, and that he should get some sun.
• The sixth involves Kayama asking Hazama what's wrong, checking a wound and saying it's just a light scrape and expressing relief, saying it's good that Hazama has been attending PE classes even though he used to skip them, saying it's hard to believe someone hurt him on purpose, saying she knows there might be people who envy him but he has something wonderful and that's why people envy him and that he should be proud of his gift.

Then Hazama eventually finds the true ruler of the tower, Zurvan.

After defeating Zurvan, Hazama becomes all-powerful and gains the power to split his mind from his body, and then he terminates his contract with Amon, much to his confusion. Amon says it must be because he pitied Hazama, to which Hazama tells him to silence himself and then rips his soul from his body, ending Amon.

Hazama's inner voice, which sounds archaeic, talks to him and brings up his past responses to the candlebra questions, to which Hazama thinks it feels strange to hear his inner voice, and then the voice tells him he can't be a god and rule over everything because he still had human aspects like resentment and longing for connection. Hazama can only rule over the Expanse.

After this, Hazama is now in control of the tower and proclaims himself the Deity Emperor, ruler of the Expanse.

In the expert ending, Stephen appears before Hazama and says he has a request for him, but Hazama turns him down.

Shin Megami Tensei if...

In the novel, Hazama's story is mostly the same as what's shown in Reiko's route in the game.

The novel followes Reiko's route but with all the other party members helping the protagonist, Jin Aoki. Yumi, Charlie, and Reiko go with Jin across the Expanse/Makai, while Akira shows up occasionally to help them.

It's revealed early on that Hazama gave Akiko a love letter and it's assumed the rejection has to do with Hazama tormenting the school.

It's mentioned that Hazama must've had the students digging so they'd eventually dig into Balaam's tunnel and inevitably get killed.

Hazama taunts Charlie over Ryuichi and Akiko in the World of Envy.

Hazama is eventually confronted in Karukozaka High by Jin, Yumi, Charlie, and Reiko, and Akira shows up to help them. After subduing Hazama, he lies unconscious and his white uniform transforms back into a Karukozaka uniform, and then Reiko leans in to protect him and prevent him from being killed. Then they end up in his mental world and see various flashbacks of his, eventually realizing why Reiko protected him.

Reiko stays behind with Hazama in the Expanse/Makai while the others return to the real world. Akira also remains behind in the Expanse/Makai.

At the end, it's noted that everyone has weakness in them and Hazama tormented the school because of his human weakness.

Shin Megami Tensei: Kahn: Kyoshoku no Rakuen

Shin Megami Tensei if...: Makai no Jin

He rides a unicorn.

His white uniform in this adaptation is his uniform from a different school.

Manga Appearances

Shin Megami Tensei if...: Gakuen no Akuma Tsukai

Hazama appears in the Shin Megami Tensei if... manga and his story mostly follows the game but he doesn't use a Deity Emperor transformation and there's no psyche dungeon.

It opens with Hazama performing a ritual at Karukozaka High, swearing to purge the pathetic low-lives from the school.

Otsuki describes Hazama as having obtained omniscient and omnipotent powers and that he's known as the Deity Emperor in the Expanse.

After Melusine's defeat, Hazama commends Nobu's and Yumi's bravery in obtaining her ring and then sends them to the sewers.

In various flashbacks, Hazama is shown as a young boy crying, students are shown laughing at him, and a girl (likely Akiko) is shown ripping up a letter, as Hazama laments that he is alone in this world, always alone, no one loves him and he doesn't love anyone, and he doesn't need them, he doesn't need anything.

After Vine's defeat, Otsuki reports it to Hazama, who is sitting on a Deity Emperor themed throne, and says they've broken a seal, to which Hazama responds, none of those things are needed, and then he tells Otsuki to eliminate Nobu and Yumi.

After they come back up to the school through the janitor closet manhole, Hazama appears before them and says he didn't think they'd actually be able to come back alive from the Expanse and commends them for breaking the seals. Nobu asks if they can finally go home and Hazama denies him, saying he never said he'd help them. He then compares them to Sun Wukong struggling in the palm of a Buddha, saying they're the same. He says their lives have only been extended a little and he could crush them at any time. Nobu gets angry and attacks, but Hazama dodges. Then Yumi recognizes him and says his name, to which Hazama gets surprised and disappears.

Here, Yumi reveals Hazama is from class 0. In a flashback, he is shown being stripped and bullied for having an odd dark marking on his body that stretches across his abdominopelvic region. Yumi yells at the other students and asks them what they think they're doing. Then they disband, but Hazama is left dejectedly covering his body.

It's revealed later that Hazama imprisoned Angra Mainyu in the school and then when he is freed he joins Nobu and Yumi to fight against Hazama.

Angra Mainyu restrains Hazama in the final confrontation, allowing Nobu to stab him through the stomach and kill him. Then Hazama laments that he has to die alone and he doesn't want to be alone anymore, to which Nobu looks sad, and then there's a panel of young Hazama crying while he says he's alone in this world, always alone. Then the school is transported back to the real world, ending with the sentiment that anyone could've ended up like Hazama.

Shin Megami Tensei: Kahn

Hazama also appears in Shin Megami Tensei Kahn, the sequel to the if... manga.

It's mentioned that Reiko would meet up with Hazama from time to time.

Hazama is shown to be making a return through Reiko, who is pregnant with his reincarnation.

Post-timeskip, Hazama is grown up and lives with Reiko, who is an old lady now.

it's revealed that Hazama is the second "Chaos".

Hazama has a flashback to his younger days where it's shown that his family was unhappy and eventually his mother left but he thought she would come back someday. Later, his father is shown as abusive towards him and one day, destroys a picture of Hazama and his mother, which prompts Hazama to get a knife and go after his father, who is then shown to have hanged himself in a suicide.

Hazama fights with Nobu again and during the clash, Reiko steps in and literally stabs Hazama in the back and defeats him, but Hazama blasts Reiko, and she says he was an abominable child who never should've been born, and Hazama responds "I know... because I am always alone". Then Hazama is absorbed by a "Chaos" who says Hazama isn't alone.

Hazama switches between watashi, ore, and boku.

• There is an unused race in Megami Ibunroku Persona which is labeled as Deity Emperor (マジンノウ) for spell cards and in the out-of-battle Analyze menu; in the in-battle Analyze menu, it is called Vile (ジャシン).
• In the game's debug messages, he is called "IQ 256".
• He was a popular student in school until his true nature was revealed.

• Hazama was named after the protagonist of the manga Black Jack, and Hazama was also chosen as a name because it carries the meaning of being between something, namely, a human and a demon.
  • "Hazama" (狭間) literally translates to "threshold/space in-between".

• Kaneko Kazuma Works Claims Ideo was named after "ideology."

• "Ideo" (偉出夫) consists of the kanji for "great/exceptional" (偉), "to emerge/go out" (出), and "man" (夫), translating closely to "exceptional man who emerges".
  • (夫) was a common suffix for boys' names in Japan during older eras.
  • Ideo is misspelled as 偉出男 on the back of the PlayStation version's case.
• Deity Emperor's kanji, majinnou (魔神皇), translate to "demon/magic" (魔), "god/deity" (神), and "emperor/sovereign" (皇).
