Persona 5 Royal is an enhanced edition of the 2016 role-playing game Persona 5, the sixth entry in the Persona series. It was developed and published by Atlus for the PlayStation 4 on October 31, 2019 in Japan, and subsequently worldwide in most other regions on March 31, 2020. In South Korea, the game released a month earlier on February 20, 2020. On October 21, 2022, Persona 5 Royal was re-released worldwide for the PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam.

Persona 5 Royal features a number of quality of life improvements and new content additions, most notably the introduction of Kasumi Yoshizawa and Takuto Maruki as new characters as well as a new post-ending story scenario.

Synopsis

After an incident where he allegedly assaulted a man, Ren Amamiya is put on probation and forced to transfer to Shujin Academy in Tokyo. The night he arrives at his new home for the year, he starts having strange dreams where he is a prisoner of fate that must be rehabilitated to stand against 'the distortion of the world' and prevent future Ruin. A phone app from the prison master grants him access to the Metaverse, a cognitive world that creates loci of strong distorted thoughts, such as that Shujin Academy's PE teacher is a sadist and pervert who thinks he rules the school as king. With new schoolmate acquaintances Ryuji and Ann, Ren awakens to his spirit of rebellion, and resolves to fight for other victims of unjust adults who cannot be touched by the law. They are joined by Morgana, a cat-shaped being who hopes to regain his memories and turn human again by investigating deeper into the Metaverse. Together, they become the Phantom Thieves of Hearts.

The main story of Persona 5, including the original game endings, can still be obtained in Persona 5 Royal. However, the plot is expanded with new characters and new scenes, especially for Kasumi Yoshizawa, Goro Akechi, and Takuto Maruki. By deepening the relationship with these characters during the original conquests of the Phantom Thieves, events after Christmas Day can change.

The deepest desires of the citizens of Tokyo—including most of the members of the Phantom Thieves—have come true, without an explanation of how or why. Ren appears to be the only one acknowledging that anything is different compared to before Christmas. With his teammates happy with their changed lives, Ren must investigate alone to find the cause of this mysteriously altered reality and a way to bring his friends to acknowledge the truth.

Gameplay Changes

A new Palace, new Mementos area, and additional bosses can be unlocked through actions taken over the course of the original Persona 5 plot. Multiple new endings are also added for different choices made during the third semester.

Social Life Changes

• New explorable location Kichijoji has stores and activities that give benefits for battling. New hangout locations have also been added.
• Confidant progression and rank rewards have been modified and hangout events have been added or remixed.
  • Two new Confidants are added: The Faith represented by Kasumi Yoshizawa, and The Councillor represented by Takuto Maruki. The Justice Confidant is changed from automatic progression to manual progression.
  • Confidant rank-up events frequently have a new follow-up phone call which gives an additional chance for affinity points toward the next rank. Giving gifts is available only if lacking the points for the next rank-up at the end of a hangout.
  • Some Confidants may be encountered while working a part-time job or doing laundry, and have a short conversation that ups Confidant affinity points.
  • Maxed-out party member Confidants can obtain a third evolution for their Persona in the third semester.
• The Calendar system has been adjusted for more available free time.
  • The crossword puzzle in Café Leblanc no longer passes time.
  • More nights have free time, even if the daytime portion is passed by story events. Many added evenings are confined to within Leblanc, but additional activities are available in that location.
• The Thieves Den is a canon-aside cognitive Palace of the protagonist, in which the player can view characters interacting in game locations, various media unlocked through game progression, and in-game achievements, as well as play a card mini-game.

Battle Changes

• All Palace layouts have been adjusted for additional content, including grappling hook actions, Will Seed locations, and Treasure Chest and searchable object locations and rewards. All bosses have adjusted mechanics and actions, and new enemies include Savage Shadow and Disaster Shadow.
• The Security Level during Palace infiltration starts at 40%. Post-Calling Card infiltration now starts at 100% and will not go below 80% (compared to 99% reducible to 70%) and reaching 100% during any visit does not force the infiltration to end. During high alert levels, Treasure Demons are more likely to appear with other Shadows, while all battles may have additional enemies arrivals for a maximum of three consecutive battles in one encounter.
• Accessories give party members an additional "skill slot" which can be a passive or usable skill.
• Ranged Weapons reload at the end of each battle instead of each Metaverse visit. They can now be customized and upgraded by Munehisa Iwai at Untouchable to have various additional effects or stats.
• Baton Pass is no longer unlocked through Confidants, but unlocked by default for party members. Playing darts with party members can unlock extra damage and buffs for consecutive Baton Passes.
• Technical damage and usable elements has been expanded. Playing billiards can unlock extra damage, usable elements, and the ability to Down enemies.
• Plot events unlock Showtimes, character team-up attacks that deal critical damage.
• The Compendium has new standard and DLC Personas, and many previous Personas have changed Arcana, levels, skills, elemental attributes, and itemization. Personas now have traits, which are passive abilities that can be generally passed on through fusion in the Velvet Room.
• Mementos has new areas, additional missions, new music and aesthetics at different levels, collectible stamps, and Deviation effects that occur randomly during exploration. Shadows will respawn infinitely in a level if the party moves away and returns.
  • A new character, Jose, appears sporadically in Mementos levels. For stamps he can change the amount of Item/Exp/Money received while in Mementos, and will also trade items for 'flower' currency found around Mementos that disappears at the end of a visit. He will automatically improve the function of accessories made from collected Will Seeds.
• The Velvet Room has various mechanical changes, including removal of the once-per-day limit for the Electric Chair, adjustments to Lockdown training, and increased ease of group guillotine fusions.
  • Fusion Alarm increases the effectiveness Velvet Room actions, but has a high chance of a special Fusion Accident after the first action is performed.
  • Optional battles set by the Twin Wardens are available in the Velvet Room, that give rewards based on points for specific actions earned during battle.
  • Two new secret boss battles were added.

Misc Changes

• The Reaper is no longer susceptible to Despair during Flu Season weather.
• Many small character scenes in the original plotline have been added or changed, including:
  • The protagonist’s and Ryuji’s encounters with two queer men in Shinjuku are rewritten (at least in English) to lessen the negative stereotypes of of those scenes.
  • Kasumi’s awakening and foreshadowing of the additional Palace have been added between the fourth and fifth Palaces.
  • A Café hangout with Kasumi and Goro Akechi in Kichijoji.
  • Goro Akechi's confidant was radically changed to a manual progression up to a certain series of plot events.
  • Some dialogue previously unvoiced in the game is now voiced, including anime cutscenes.
  • Haru Okumura, Makoto Niijima, Sae Niijima, Goro Akechi, Tae Takemi, and Ichiko Ohya make cameos earlier in the game than their original appearances.

2022 Re-release

As a part of Persona's 25th Anniversary, Persona 5 Royal was remastered for modern consoles. On October 20th, 2022 worldwide, Persona 5 Royal was released on Windows for Steam and the Microsoft Store, and consoles for the Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The Steam, Microsoft Store, and Xbox versions of the re-releases contained all downloadable content from both previous releases. The Steam and Microsoft Store versions also included other various improvements such as a higher frame rate cap and keyboard and mouse support.
