Technical is a mechanic in Persona 5. It allows users to increase the amount of damage they deal with a single attack, regardless of the target's weaknesses, by exploiting status ailments. A similar mechanic appears in the Digital Devil Saga series.

Overview

By hitting an enemy with a specific element when they are inflicted with a status ailment, a Technical hit will trigger. When a Technical hit triggers, it will make the attack that triggered it ignore weaknesses or resistances and increase its damage. Multi-hitting attacks will trigger Technical hits for each hit.

Technical combinations are used as a tactic to manually open enemies to vulnerability by combining them with affinity-based skills. Certain combatants only specialize in either afflicting or exploiting and as such require a helping hand.

The Digital Devil Saga series has a similar mechanic. In thesse games, when a target is afflicted with the Mute or Curse status effects, certain attacks deal additional damage.

Persona 5

This section is in need of research.
Reason: ‎
  • Is Technical/Resist suppressed if the two statuses interact? (Note: Freeze allowing Physical skills to pierce might indicate that multiple attack conditions simply cannot be displayed simultaneously.)
  • Technical multiplier for P5 might be incorrect. Also, does it vary per ailment like in Royal?

When an enemy is afflicted with an ailment, certain elemental skills can trigger a Technical hit. When a Technical is triggered, the word "Technical!" is displayed across the screen and the damage dealt by the attack that triggered it is multiplied by 1.8x.

The Technical damage multiplier and the effect of Weak do not stack: for normal cases, if the enemy is Weak to the respective skill, no Technical damage will be dealt. Freeze bypasses that rule because all of the user's affinities to Physical and Gun are neutralized while frozen, weaknesses included. Similarly, Technical is suppressed when the user lands a Critical Hit or when using non-damaging skills, like Insta-Kills. Almighty skills can generally deal Technical damage where applicable, except for draining skills such as Life Drain.

The attributes that can trigger Technical depend on the inflicted ailment. In particular, Psychokinesis skills and Nuclear skills have secondary effects that specifically target ailments. Ailment skills affected by Psychokinesis are collectively referred to as "mental ailments."

Persona 5 Royal

In Persona 5 Royal, Technical damage has been overhauled and expanded upon, now serving as an alternative to exploiting weaknesses for enemies that have none, while party members have altered skill sets which play more into ailment infliction and the Technical system.

The default Technical damage multiplier is 1.5x to begin with, but it can vary depending on the ailment, with Burn starting at 2.0x and Shock and Freeze starting at 1.75x. There is now a chance for the enemy to be knocked down if hit with a Technical, which will trigger a One More. Furthermore, the Forget ailment is now vulnerable to Psychokinesis Skills, and new Technical combinations can be added after reading Knowing the Heart, which is available in Jinbocho once all the other books sold there have been read. If the game is on Merciless difficulty, like the mode's boost to Critical hits and weaknesses in Royal, the damage of Technical attacks will be tripled, whether from allies or foes. The damage dealt by Technicals can also be further increased with the Skillful Technique and Universal Law Traits.

Like Baton Pass, it is now possible to rank up Technical attacks by playing billiards at Penguin Sniper in Kichijoji, which increases the damage multiplier by 0.1x per rank and eventually increases the Down rate. The Rank is a global multiplier that applies for all allies in battle. In order to increase the rank, the protagonist must have sufficient Proficiency, have read certain books and have certain items. Despite the label "Technical Damage+", there is actually no increase when unlocking the first Technical Rank.

Reason: ‎Damage multiplier from Technical hits.

The Technical combinations in Strikers are based on Persona 5, meaning the Forget ailment does not open Technical opportunities like in Royal.
