Nomenclature
春 Haru is a given name meaning 'springtime'. 奥村 Okumura is derived from 奥 oku, meaning 'inner', and 村 mura, 'village'.
Like most Confidants in Persona 5, Haru's name is an allusion to a Japanese historical figure, in this case feminist activist Hiratsuka Raichō (平塚 らいちょう).[a]Raichō being her pen name, she was born Hiratsuka Haru (平塚 明). Hiratsuka's partner was named Okumura Hiroshi [ja] (奥村 博史), but despite having a family they did not marry for many years, and when they did Hiratsuka further broke convention by not taking Okumura's family name. Hiratsuka's advocacy for women to not merely be subservient to their husbands in loveless marriages is reflected in Haru's refusal to enter an arranged marriage solely to advance her father's financial/political motives. Additionally, the surname of Haru's fiancé, Sugimura, as well as the specific kanji used for Haru's given name may be a reference to the prolific Japanese actress Haruko Sugimura (杉村 春子, Sugimura Haruko).
