Athena was the Greek goddess of warfare, wisdom, and handicraft. She is regarded as the protectress in various cities, particularly the city of Athens. She is generally depicted wearing a helmet and holding a spear. She is also depicted with an accessory known as the aegis, interpreted most often as a goatskin cape bearing the appearance of a gorgon, typically Medusa.
