Persona 5 Royal

Background

Other than researching cognitive psience beforehand, not much is known about Maruki prior to his "awakening" of Azathoth. On 2/3 of an unspecified year before the events of the game, Maruki's fiancée Rumi was severely injured in a home invasion that killed her parents. After falling into a catatonic depression, Maruki tries to help her heal but ends up causing her to have a breakdown. In a moment of grief and desperation, Maruki accidentally summons Azathoth, albeit only partially. Maruki makes a deal with Azathoth and awakens his Actualization- the ability to control cognition. He first uses it inadvertently on Rumi, erasing her memories of the accident and, consequently, of Maruki and their relationship. Not wishing to reignite her trauma, he leaves Rumi and fully devotes his time to cognitive research so he can help humanity as a whole.

Initially, his efforts were well received, with Maruki even planning to open a research station in Odaiba in place of a stadium. But his research and funding were prematurely cut short under the guise that there was no evidence to support his labors. In actuality, however, it was a ploy by Masayoshi Shido to steal his research for his own goals. Despite Maruki leaving university as a result, this event only made Maruki delve deeper, if only to validate his own work. While uncertain at first, Maruki continues to use his Actualization to assist more people.

He eventually becomes a councillor, and his use of Actualization comes to a head a month before the events of the game on 3/25, when one of his clients, Sumire Yoshizawa, wishes to become her sister Kasumi after a tragic car accident killed her. Maruki, not wanting to see her suffer, uses his Actualization to change her cognition to make her think she is Kasumi. Maruki himself considers this to be second time such a massive change was caused by his Actualization.

Main Game

While Maruki is properly introduced on 5/13, he's first seen on 4/15 for a brief moment after escaping Kamoshida's Palace with Ann. It's later revealed during his Rank 10 event that Maruki saw them leave the Metaverse and subsequently caused Maruki to discover that the Protagonist is a Phantom Thief and enlist his help with his cognitive research. On 5/13, Principal Kobayakawa brings on Maruki as a temporary councillor to remedy for the Kamoshida incident, which automatically unlocks the Councillor Arcana.

Christmas Eve

If Maruki's Confidant is completed by 11/19, after completing his research, Maruki goes to the company that originally funded his research to plead his case. During the ensuing argument, they both bear witness to Qliphoth World. Due to the real world and the Metaverse partially merging, Maruki fully awakens to Azathoth, and upon the defeat of Yaldabaoth, obtains full control of his Actualization, allowing him to alter the cognition of at least all of Japan.
