Origin
Tiamat (from the Semitic root t-h-m, meaning "sea") is a primordial deity in the ancient Babylonian religion who, with Apsu, brings forth the first generation of gods. She is later slain by the god Marduk, who splits her body in two, and the two halves become heaven and earth.
Design
In Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II, Tiamat is depicted as a red wingless dragon.
In Shin Megami Tensei II, Tiamat is given her first major design by Kazuma Kaneko as a monstrous woman covering in blue scales with green hair, three pairs of breasts and serveral white snakes coiling around her body.
In Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, Tiamat is given her second major design by Kazuma Kaneko. This design bares multiple similarities to the one from Shin Megami Tensei 2, namely that she has the body of a large blue skinned woman with three pairs of breasts, however she now has the armless body of woman emerging from the neck of the large body from the torso up and multiple snake like tentacles emerging from the waist of this second smaller body. The head of this new body has four yellow eyes and hair in a fashion similar to depictions of women from ancient Babylon and surrounding cultures. Her skin is also given a texture resembling water rather than the scales of the previous design.
Tiamat was given a drastic redesign in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance by Masayuki Doi to match her role in the story. She is depicted as an enormous serpent with the head of a goat, dragon, and camel emerging from her neck, each one with a pair of golden fins on the side of its face, while also having a humanoid body resting atop them. Her humanoid body is armless similar to her Soul Hackers design, however while fused to her serpent body a pair of legs and be seen giving the appearance of her sitting on the serpent with several tail like tentacles around her waist resembling a dress, and her head is completely devoid of features aside from her eyes and a pair of upwards pointing horns. Her body is entirely black with golden accents, and her serpent tail is lined with multiple growths that resemble breasts. Tiamat is notable for being one of the largest demon in the game, towering over the player character and other demons.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance
|
Primordial goddess of Babylonian mythology. Often represented as a dragon with a female torso and a serpentine body, but some accounts describe her with the features of a goat or a camel.
A being deified by the sea, she is said to have given birth to numerous gods with her husband Apsu, a giant freshwater god. When war with the gods eventually broke out, she created eleven monsters to fight, but was slain by Marduk, who fought on behalf of the other gods. When she died, her body was torn apart, half of her becoming heaven and the other half becoming earth. By this, her defeat became the foundation of the mortal world's creation.

Tiamat is the goddess and mother of the Qadištu, worshiped as the Primordial Serpent. In eons past, Tiamat ruled over the universe in a state of primordial chaos until the Babylonian god Marduk sought to claim the Throne of Creation, killing her and establishing the rule of the Horned Gods.[1] Any gods of Tiamat's lineage were barred from claiming the Throne by a curse placed on it by Marduk, ensuring that only those of his own lineage would have the right to create a new world.[2]
At the start of Vengeance, the Qadištu and their allies seek to resurrect Tiamat and are relentlessly collecting Magatsuhi to offer power to Tiamat. As she is a Divine Dragon, the spell to undo her death requires the sacrifice of a Divine Dragonslayer. As such, after encountering the Nahobino he is targeted for this purpose, as he carries the Knowledge of Susano-o.[3] After the confrontation between the Qadištu and the Nahobino in the Serpent's Grave, Naamah, Eisheth and Agrat sacrifice themselves along with the Nahobino to complete the summoning, with Aogami being consumed but succeeding in preventing the protagonist from also being absorbed into Tiamat.
Upon her resurrection Tiamat lays waste to Shinjuku with her Annihilation Ray, killing Nuwa in the process before disappearing, guided to the Throne of Creation by Yoko Hiromine in order to destroy it. She reappears when the Nahobino, now fused with Tsukuyomi, arrived before the Throne of Creation. If the Nahobino is Law aligned, Yoko with furiously trap both him and Tao in the Serpents Grave and unleash Tiamat on them in order to destroy the system, while if the Nahobino is Chaos aligned Mastema will appear and wrest control of Tiamat away from Yoko and drag them into the Serpents Grave to be killed for defying his Lord. After the boss battle in both routes, the Nahobino is unable to kill Tiamat due to her primordial nature making her immortal.[4][5] She attacks with her Annihilation Ray, fatally wounding Tsukuyomi as well as whichever goddess the protagonist sided with and leaving the protagonist defenceless. However the battle against Tiamat granted Aogami's magatsuhi the chance to escape Tiamat, allowing him to reform and reunite with the Nahobino once again. Due to Aogami being a Divine Dragonslayer by virtue of being Susano-o reborn, he and the protagonists combined power is able to bypass Tiamat's immortality, and once they refuse and kill Tiamat with a single strike from their Murakumo.[6]

- ↑ "Lilith: A very long time ago... there lived a primordial Goddess. A most benevolent mother who gave birth to many gods. She was a kind mother. And noble. She disliked conflict and violence. But then... The Horned God came... Seeking his throne, he slew all in his path. And the mother was cut down. Since his rise... the throne has been usurped by descendants of that horned god. For eons upon eons." Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. Developed by ATLUS.
- ↑ "Samael: Are you aware that it is the first ruler, the bull god Marduk, who is responsible for twisting this world? He placed a curse upon the throne such that his reign would persist, even should his rule be challenged. And the system that governs this world allowed it. Perhaps because it would not stymie the continuation of the cycle... Therefore, we, the followers of the serpent, seek to erase that curse, the system, and this world that has been wrought with oppression!" Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. Developed by ATLUS.

The horned god slayed the serpent-or the "dragon," as some call it. But by using this principle, the serpent can be revived... By offering the life of the horned god that slayed the serpent, the slain will be reawakened from death. That's why the Qadištu need a sacrifice to summon the goddess of chaos."
