Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible is a remastered edition of the 1992 Game Boy role-playing game Last Bible, the first entry in the Last Bible series, for the Game Gear. It was developed by SIMS,[1] and published by Atlus on April 22, 1994 in Japan.

The remaster introduces new and revised content not present in the Game Boy and later Game Boy Color versions of the original game; most notably with the addition of an expanded story and a new final dungeon. Additionally, it also features updated graphics that make use of the Game Gear's full color display, a new soundtrack, and several mechanical changes.

To date, this version of Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible has not seen an official release outside of Japan. It received an English fan translation with script by Translator Tom and was released on March 31, 2019.[2]

Synopsis

Long before life began on the Fifth Planet, human-like entities had descended onto the planet and brought with them the Orichalcum, substances that could amplify life. The Orichalcum was strewn across the planet and had spawned its natural fauna. The entities could also summon supernatural abilities called Gaia.

In present times, an annual ritual became to be held at Mount Paro, where every 14-year old child would gather for one to be selected as the next Gaia Master Candidate. During one such ritual, El, Kishe, and Uranus were all selected to be Gaia Master Candidates. At the same time they began their training, the older Gaia Masters Michael and Lucifer had suddenly disappeared without a trace.[3] Two years following his selection at the ritual, El has graduated his Gaia training and promoted to a Gaia Paragon under the guidance of his teacher, Zodia. While the pair prepare to train the next generation of Gaia students, Beasts suddenly descend from the sky and launch an assault in demand of the Orichalcum. In the midst of the crisis, El is urged to hurry to the Shrine of Lemuria, where one of the planet's four sources of Orichalcum is kept.

As El investigates the crisis and challenges the Beasts, he eventually meets and befriends Kishe and Uranus. Together they travel the world to protect the Orichalcum and to discern the Beasts' true motives.

Gameplay Differences

Numerous changes were made in the Game Gear version compared to the original Game Boy release:

  • The Game Gear version features an expanded story with new and revised details not present in the original release:
    • A pre-title screen exposition is added explaining the Fifth Planet and Orichalcum's backstory.
    • The party naming sequence is expanded into a cutscene where the three main characters, El, Kishe, and Uranus, are chosen to be Gaia Master Candidates in a ritual two years before the present. The game script has been revised to match this.
    • The sequence where Kishe joins the party is significantly changed, requiring that El backtracks between Lemuria and the Town of Arrow. The Medicine key item is no longer available as a result.
    • Triton now guards the Jachin Staff, instead of the Boaz Staff as in the original game.
    • Defeating Lucifer at Luciferium will now lock the party to Terra as a place of no return, making it no longer possible to revisit the Fifth Planet. Luciferium and the Ark will also no longer be accessible afterward.
    • The ending sequence is significantly expanded with an additional scenario, involving the Monolith Labyrinth as a new final dungeon and several new bosses.
    • The game ends after defeating the new final boss. The post-end game continuation in the original release, which allowed the game to resume after the ending, is no longer present.
      • The Gaia Masters that could be recruited around the world in the post-end game are consequently no longer present.
  • The game's graphics have been overhauled, featuring mostly new graphics that make use of the Game Gear's full color display.
    • Beasts have completely new battle sprites. Beasts that previously shared graphics in the Game Boy version now have unique sprites.
    • Map tiles, such as those in towns, dungeons, and the overworld, have been redrawn.
  • The Game Gear version features an unique, expanded original soundtrack.
  • The VS Mode from the original release, where players could battle each other over a linked connection, is no longer present.
  • The lead party member can now dash by holding the 1 button.
  • The party now share a single inventory with space for up to 28 items and equipment, instead of each party member having their own inventory.
  • The Depository can now only store up to 28 items at a time.
  • As the party now share a single inventory, Kishe and Uranus no longer carry default equipment when they join the party.
  • Some gameplay mechanics were revised:
    • Some Beasts have level, skill, or statistic value changes.
    • The Boaz Staff was replaced by Ruth's Staff.
  • The Nymph in Nova Ramū no longer teaches El the stronger Zanma skill.
