Barbatos is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Barbatos is a spirit in European demonology first attested as Barbarus, the 1st spirit in The Munich Handbook of Necromancy. He is a great count and duke who appears in the sign of a forest archer with four kings bearing trumpets. He understands the vocalizations of animals, and he can find treasure hidden that was not hidden with magic or chants. He is of the order of the Virtues and has 36 legions under his command.[1]

Barbatos is later present as the 6th spirit in Johann Weyer's Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, which draws from earlier sources. Barbatos is described very similarly to Barbarus's description in the Munich Handbook. He now can find treasure hidden by magicians and enchanters, knows the past and future, and can reconcile the minds of friends and foes. He is also specified to be both of the order of the Virtues and also partially of the Dominions, and now has 30 legions under his command.[2]

In the Ars Goetia section of The Lesser Key of Solomon, which is heavily based on the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, Barbatos is said to be the 8th spirit summoned by King Solomon of Israel.[3]
