Origin

Dominions are one of the ranks in the hierarchy of angels according to Pseudo-Dionysius in On the Celestial Hierarchy. The name is derived from Ephesians 1:21, which mentions that God is far above all principality, power, might, and dominion (dominationem in the Vulgate); and from Colossians 1:16, which mentions that God is the creator of thrones, dominions (dominationes in the Vulgate), principalities, and powers.

Dominion's Latin name, dominatio ("dominion; mastery; domination"), is translated from the Greek κυριότης (kyriótēs, "lordship"), the abstract noun form of κῡ́ριος (kýrios, "lord"). Isidore of Seville claims that dominions earned their name because "they dominate (...) other bands of angels."

Design

For its Shin Megami Tensei II design, Dominion is depicted holding a pair of scales. According to Kazuma Kaneko, this is to represent its role as a "god of rules", so it was intended to evoke the idea of "laws".
