Originally, it was a name given to a widow who died as a martyr to her husband, but who, because of her strong attachment to this world, remained in the grave and became a child-eating Rasutsu, a horrible being.
She is generally seen as an ugly old woman, but she can change her appearance at will, and appears before those who aspire to black magic as an immensely beautiful girl.
She is also an incarnation of Durga, the wife of Shiva, the god of destruction.
It is said that the world maintains its form when good and evil are pitted against each other, and that Barong, the symbol of good, and Rangda, the symbol of evil, continue to fight an endless battle.
