Asura, also known as Ashura, is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Asuras are powerful semi-divine beings that appear in Hinduism, Buddhism, and other Dharmic religions. They are usually depicted as passionate and warlike, although their morality varies heavily in different religions, schools, and legends. In the Vedas, the term Asura is used interchangeably with Deva, but later texts present the Asuras as a distinct group opposed to the Devas.

The Sanskrit word Asura is cognate to the Avestan word 𐬀𐬵𐬎𐬭𐬀 ahura (lord), which forms part of the name of Ahura Mazda (which means "lord of wisdom"); this is referenced in Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II and in compendium entries.

Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II

Ashura appears in the Suzuki Company headquarters in Ginza. If the Hero recruited Lucifer into his party, Ashura will transform into Ahura Mazda and join; otherwise, Ashura will engage the Hero's party in battle.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey

Asura is first mentioned when the Protagonist and Zelenin are searching Mitra's private lab for clues on how to deal with the Delphinus Parasite. There, they find the Madman's Stone, which is inscribed with a commemoration by Mitra celebrating his and Asura's efforts to crystallize human madness.

Later, in Sector Delphinus, after all the instances of the Delphinus Parasite have been defeated, the Protagonist and Zelenin are beckoned by it to see its true form, which leads the two to a room with a statue. Multiple Delphinus Parasites begin to enter the statue until the statue transforms into Asura himself, who reveals himself as the cause of the Delphinus Parasite. Asura calls out humanity's covetness and harming of the planet, and vents his frustration that even after trying to "polish" their spirits with the parasite, the humans are still insistent on wanting to escape the Schwarzwelt. He questions why they do not want to become beautiful like he believes they once were, but Zelenin vehemently rejects that there is any beauty in fighting, believing that it will be through observing order that humanity will better itself. Asura, however, rejects order, claiming that order is what has caused the human spirit to decay, and that the chaos of the ancient world, where the strong ruled the weak, who in turn respected the strong, is what made humans beautiful. He continues to disparage order and insists that it is the Earth's Will that the demons summoned by the Schwarzwelt bring chaos back into the world and, regardless of whatever the Protagonist says to him, attacks him. Upon his defeat, he remains confident that they cannot stop the Earth from being filled with Chaos and laughs arrogantly as he dies, dropping his Rosetta Stone after the fact.

In Sector Fornax, Asura seeks revenge on the Protagonist, having been revived by Tiamat and given the power to return to his true form alongside his fellow Rosettas. Near the end of the sector, the Protagonist has his progress blocked off by what is revealed to be a Delphinus Parasite demon, which, after it is defeated, returns to Asura's body. Going further down into the sector, he meets Asura again, who proclaims he will not allow him to reach Tiamat, then transforms into his true form Asherah to attack him.

Majin Tensei

If the Hero refuses to let both Uriel and Zouchouten join his party, in stage 44 Asura will appear as a neutral demon that can be negotiated with and recruited. If the Hero let either of them join him, Asura will not appear.

Trivia

• During development of Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, Asura's name was at one point spelled as Ashura (アシュラ) instead of Asura (アスラ).
