Origin

Thor (lit. "thunder") is the god of lightning, thunder and storms and a prominent figure in Norse mythology. Son of the All Father Odin, he is among the strongest figures in the Norse pantheon with various tales of his might and power. He wields three sacred items: Mjölnir, a hammer of great strength; Járngreipr or Járnglófar, iron gauntlets he uses when wielding Mjölnir; and Megingjörð, a belt that increases his already immense power by half.[1]

Thor has his origins in common Germanic tradition, being the root of the name of the day Thursday (a Germanic adaptation of the Latin Dies Iovis, or "Day of Jove"). In Germany, cognates of the name directly referring to a deity are attested on the Nordendorf fibulae (ᚦᛟᚾᚨᚱ Þonar) and in a baptismal vow found in Mainz (Thonaer). Tacitus mentions the Germans as worshiping Hercules, which has been speculated to refer to Thor.

Prior to his murder of Baldur, Thor was a frequent companion of Loki, with various tales recounting their adventures. Once Mjölnir was stolen by the giant Thrymr and would only return it if the goddess Freyja would marry him. Loki plotted to steal back the hammer by dressing Thor in a wedding dress and veil to deceive Thrymr into believing that Thor was Freyja agreeing to marry him with Loki acting as his maid. At the wedding Thor struggled to hide his rage, his glare sending Thrymr across the hall in fear, but with Loki's aid they were able to deceive the giants until Mjölnir was brought before Thor as a blessing for their marriage, to which Thor ripped of his disguise and slaughtered Thrymr and his kin.

He is prophesied to do battle at Ragnarok where he will fight the world serpent Jörmungandr to the death, with Thor successfully killing the serpent only to succumb to it's poison after nine steps.

Thor is the American Ambassador Thorman's true identity. If the Hero defeats Gotou and visits Thorman again, he will be pleasantly suprised and reveal himself to be Thor, a servant of God, and then asks that the Hero continue to do the Lord's work. If the Hero agrees, Thor will be pleased, but then informs him that despite Gotou's plans being thwarted, there are too many demons in Tokyo to manage, so ICBMs must be launched to eradicate them all and begin the construction of the Millennium Kingdom. He leaves promptly after as the missiles are launched at the city. If the Hero refuses to work with him, the god becomes enraged and attacks the party, but although he is defeated, he is still able to launch the nuclear warheads before he dies, which obliterate Tokyo.

End of spoilers.

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne

Thor is a member of the Mantra Army and is Gozu-Tennoh's right-hand man. He is primarily responsible for organizing the army.[2]

When the Demi-fiend first enters the Mantra's Headquarters, he finds Isamu Nitta being confronted by Thor. As Isamu is distracted by the Demi-fiend's appearance, Thor wordlessly swings his hammer at the boy, which sends him flying back-first into a pillar, and proceeds to grab Isamu's head and absorb some Magatsuhi from him. Thor then notices the Demi-fiend's presence and orders some Nues to imprison him for trespassing on Mantra territory. To prove his innocence, Demi-fiend is put on a trial of strength where he must defeat a set of opponents, with Thor being the final obstacle he must face. Impressed by the Demi-fiend's strength, Thor gives him the Narukami Magatama and tells him to meet Gozu-Tennoh, as he believes his power can change the world. He then orders the judge to pardon him and permits him to freely enter the Mantra's Headquarters.

Later, after Gozu-Tennoh's death, Thor declares that the Mantra have been destroyed by the Assembly of Nihilo and attributes their aimless reign over Tokyo to their failure to best the Nihilo, who, in contrast, had a more complex goal in mind. Thor abandons Ikebukuro and sets out on a personal journey to achieve his ideal world ruled by the strong, though he says that if the Demi-fiend is truly strong, they will meet again.

At the end of the game, Demi-fiend crosses paths with Thor for a final time in the Tower of Kagutsuchi. Thor is slightly surprised at seeing how strong the Demi-fiend has become, and, having become a follower of Yosuga, will address the Demi-fiend differently depending on his route. If the Demi-fiend is not Yosuga-aligned, Thor will attack him to prevent him from getting in the way of the world of Yosuga's creation. After his defeat, Thor is shocked at his prowess but remains confident that Chiaki will be able to create the strong world of Yosuga, perishing as he proclaims Yosuga's glory. If the Demi-fiend is Yosuga-aligned, although Thor will acknowledge that they are both followers of Yosuga, he will nonetheless wish to test Demi-fiend's strength against his to decide who is truly the strongest between them. After being defeated, a dying Thor approves of the Demi-fiend's power and promises to lend his power to him if he summons him through Fusion. He dies as he entrusts him with the world of Yosuga.

He has a second costly thing, best of all: the girdle of might; and when he clasps it about him, then the godlike strength within him is increased by half.
