Persona Stalker Club was a web talk show about the Persona series.

Overview

The show was co-hosted by gaming writer and personality Mafia Kajita and voice actress Tomomi Isomura. The show began airing in 2014 on the Japanese video platform Nico Nico Douga, shortly after the announcement about Persona 5 back in November of 2013. The show was usually pre-recorded, though some episodes were live streamed. It aired monthly until April of 2016 when it was announced that the show would be renamed Persona Stalker Club V leading up to the release of Persona 5. In addition to Nico Nico Douga, V also aired on the Abema Fresh! platform. The final episode of V aired in March of 2017.

During the show, Isomura and Kajita would discuss the latest in Persona news. There was a Q&A segment called, "Ah-ha, I S.E.E.S. It" (Japanese: なるほどなー S.E.E.S., romanized Naruhodo nā S.E.E.S.) where selected user-submitted questions would get responses from Atlus. There was also a segment where the hosts read user-submitted misheard lyrics from Persona songs, called the "Persoramimi Theater" (Japanese: ペル空耳劇場, romanized Perusoramimi gekijō), a portmanteau of "Persona" and "soramimi", or Persora for short. Sometimes the show would have guests, namely voice actors and Atlus personnel.

A special segment called "PQ Terrible Cooking" (Japanese: PQ散々クッキング, romanized PQ sanzan kukkingu) was featured in Episode 9, where the hosts attempted to cook the curry that appeared in the school trip in Persona 4.

Persoramimi Theater

Stalker Club's most popular segment was the Persoramimi Theater, or the Per(sona) misheard lyrics theater, where viewers would submit what the English lyrics in Persona music sounded like to them in Japanese. These segments included artwork related to the misheard lyrics drawn by Etrian Odyssey's artist Yuji Himukai. For example, in one episode, the English line "Could turn out to be" from "Best Friends" was heard as "kutta nasubi" meaning "eaten eggplant", and the accompanying art showed a hungry Tohru Adachi eating an eggplant animal that Nanako Dojima set out to celebrate Obon Festival. These illustrations are sold as official sticker packs for the Japanese messaging app, Line.

Albums

The songs that frequently came up during the Persoramimi segments were collected into five albums called Persora: The Golden Best. Albums 2-5 also include a new remix by members of the Atlus Sound Team as a bonus track.

Persora Awards

The hosts of Stalker Club held three Persora Awards where they and various voice actor guests would review and select the best Persoramimi submissions. Persora Awards 1 and 2 were released as standalone BD/DVDs and also as part of box collections that included the awards show, episodes of Stalker Club, and bonus content. Persora Awards 3 was only released as part of a box collection.

Ah-ha, I S.E.E.S. It

This segment was named after a line of Aigis's from Persona 3. The hosts would read fan-submitted questions, chat about what they thought the answer might be, then read Atlus's response, then say, "Ah-ha, I S.E.E.S. it!" in response. Later, the hosts got the Persona 3 movie Aigis plush which plays a voice clip of the line when pressed.

This segment was not always structured as a Q&A and was sometimes just a way of showing new info. For example, during episode 6, the "Ah-ha, I S.E.E.S. it!" segment had Adachi's voice actor do combo challenges in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax and for each one he completed, they would preview cutscenes from story mode. If he failed a challenge, he could still make up for it by chewing on a re-creation of Chie's Meat Gum (beef jerky flakes sprinkled on a regular stick of mint gum).

When the show ended at episode 26 and returned as V, the Q&A segment did not return until the finale, episode 10.

Episode 01

Q: What happens if you unzip the zipper between Izanagi's legs?
A: Inside the zipper is a Shadow. A Persona wearing a zipped battle suit represents controlling your suppressed ego with strong willpower.

Q: Why does Shinjiro Aragaki wear his cap and coat even during summer?
A: His Persona suppressing drugs interfere with his body's temperature regulation.

Episode 02

Q: Please tell me where the eyes are on Yosuke Hanamura's Persona, Jiraiya.
A: The two holes in the middle (next to the yellow stars) are the eyes.

Q: What music does Yosuke listen to during battles?
A: Western music so he can pretend to be an expert in western music, Japanese music so he can talk to girls about it, movie soundtracks like Trial of the Dragon, etc.

Q: Why does Mitsuru's father wear an eyepatch?
A: It seems that he was injured by Shadow(s) while exploring Tartarus.

Episode 04

Q: Since Tartarus used to be a school, does it have stuff like air conditioning?
A: The school's original AC units might still be there, but it's highly unlikely that they still function since electronics quit working during the Dark Hour.

Q: What causes the sound effect that occurs when a Persona is summoned?
A: The sound effect represents the summoner breaking the boundary between the conscious and unconscious to use their Persona's powers.

Episode 05

Q: Why do Dojima and Adachi wear the same red tie? It's weird that the two of them wear a plain, bright red necktie that would stand out like a sore thumb even if they weren't detectives. Was it just a coincidence, or is there a reason for this?
A: Dojima couldn't stand seeing Adachi wear some old, wrinkled, worn-out tie, so Dojima gave Adachi one of his spares.

Q: Adachi's hobby is supposedly "revolver maintenance", but it doesn't seem like he can do things that require dexterity very well, and he's never shown actually maintaining a revolver in the story. Can he really do revolver maintenance?
A: He does maintenance on model guns he owns at home since he can't take his police-issued revolver home.

Q: In a particular scene, Adachi whips out a lighter from his pocket. Does he smoke?
A: Adachi doesn't smoke himself. He keeps a lighter on hand in case Dojima asks for a light.

Q: Adachi always calls the main characters "naive", "dumb kids", and generally looks down on them, but he's quite relaxed when it comes to Dojima, and I don't think he's ever said a bad thing about him. I want to know why Adachi is like that with Dojima. What happened when they first met?
A: One of the reasons why is because when they first met, Dojima got him sushi so Adachi thought he was a good guy.

Q: In the story, Adachi buys a lot of cabbage. What did he make with all of that cabbage? (Actually, can Adachi even cook?)
A: Adachi would cut up a fresh ball of cabbage vertically into large pieces like it's a watermelon and have it as a beer snack with some miso and mayo/kewpie.

Q: Adachi, one of the characters in Persona 4, is now a popular character. He's become Persona 4's ratings guy / crowd pleaser. That said, when you were making Persona 4, were you consciously trying to make Adachi a character that wouldn't be hated but rather adored by the players? What is the appeal of Adachi, who, despite being "egocentric", has acquired a loyal fanbase?
A: During production, we cared about all the characters, not just Adachi. We're quite pleased to see when a character unexpectedly becomes popular. As for his appeal, that's up to you.

Episode 08

Q: How is Aigis able to wear shoes with her Gekkoukan High School uniform when her feet are shaped like that?
A: When wearing her school uniform, Aigis has optional foot attachments with ankles. Also, the tiptoe foot design is to make her more mobile and have better jumping capability. This design was inspired by Bambi and horses.

Q: Is Aigis's body hard or soft?
A: Aigis's exterior body is made of reinforced fibre that's fireproof, bulletproof, and bladeproof to give her defense when fighting Shadows, but it's not particularly thick since she needs to be able to wear clothing over it. The rest was made to imitate a human.

Q: The necklace Junpei Iori wears in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax looks similar to the sword Chidori Yoshino has on her head. Did Chidori make the necklace herself and give it to Junpei?
A: Chidori gave Junpei the necklace, made by an apparel brand she likes, as a present.

Episode 09

Q: Was Teddie's human form based on / inspired by someone else?
A: It's how Teddie imagined an ideal cool guy who would be loved by all.

Q: Chie Satonaka says that Teddie caused a commotion on the women's floor of Junes. What did he say? Was it dirty?
A: Yes, dirty. It seems he began yelling about the brand names and shapes of underwear that caught his eye.

Q: How does Teddie make the glasses in Persona 4?
A: Teddie skillfully constructs them using tools from an optician's store located in the TV World's Inaba and materials he gathers from around the area.

Q: Did Chie and Yukiko Amagi's curry have any curry powder? Also, what kind of seafood did they include?
A: Yukiko probably knew that you needed "curry powder" of some kind, but based on how she picked ingredients plus Yosuke's reaction, Yukiko probably used random yellow powders and spices instead of a solid roux block. As for the seafood, the girls probably didn't use raw fish for health reasons. It's possible they bought fish that doubles as being good for making soup stock (such as frozen squid and frozen shrimp, scallops, frozen tuna for impromptu sashimi, and dried/preserved fish used for ryokan breakfast); thus, they could kill two birds with one stone. Those kinds of ingredients might have been why the curry had such varied textures.

Episode 10

Q: Does Nanako Dojima know that the bear costume and the blonde boy are both Teddie?
A: People in general think that Teddie is a pretty boy who began working part-time at Junes in an animal mascot outfit. The Investigation Team sometimes talks about Shadows in front of Nanako, and she doesn't find it weird because a lot of things are weird to her at that age.

Q: During the omurice contest, Nanako says that everyone's omurice is delicious. Did she really mean that, or was she just being polite?
A: She calls everyone's omurice delicious, but her voice was clearly different when she tried the protagonist's, so I think she was just being polite.

Q: Why does Nanako like Junes?
A: Probably because where she lives, Junes is the most fun place she can go to. Also, Nanako likes the Junes commercial because kids her age like those catchy jingles with meaningless lyrics that have onomatopoeia.

Episode 11

Q: What type of hot spring is at Yukiko's inn? What kind of benefits does it offer? Also, how much is it for 2 days / 1 night?
A: The type is what's generally known as a radon spring. Radon springs have medicinal properties, so that's one of the Amagi Inn's specialties. The price is based on the season, but it's also the most luxury inn around the Yasoinaba area, so the price is reasonable.

Q: Yukiko was the one who took over after her mother collapsed, but her father is never mentioned. Is he still alive, or is he dead like Kanji's father?
A: No, he isn't dead. But he is the manager of an old traditional inn, so he has a lot of office work and goes to meetings outside of the inn.

Episode 12

Q: Does Rise wear earrings with a piercing-type backing, or does she wear clip-ons?
A: Clip-ons.

Q: Where did Aragaki live before moving back into the S.E.E.S. dormitory?
A: He was probably living somewhere by himself, or he kept being an unwanted guest at the homes of his shady friends. Probably a big reason why he got to know Strega so well was cause he spent so long as a vagrant.

Q: During Episode Adachi in P4AU, Adachi mentions getting tired of seeing the Moonlight Bridge when he was in the city. Did he used to live in Iwatodai?
A: He didn't necessarily live there, but he worked in the city center and would take the scenic route back to HQ by driving over to Moonlight Bridge to imitate a character on a popular detective drama.

Episode 13

Q: Who is Margaret's favorite (hot guy) Persona?
A: I think Ardha, Helel, and Yoshitsune are her favorites since she swaps between them a lot. She uses Oberon for the 9999 damage Megidolaon, so maybe she's got some obsession with him?

Q: Why does the Protagonist in Persona 3 wear his MP3 player in Tartarus? It makes sense during his everyday life, but it doesn't work during the Dark Hour, and it seems like it would be annoying swinging around during battle, or I think it would break when he gets attacked. Did he just forget to take it off?
A: Part of the reason why is that he will sometimes listen to it on the way to Tartarus. The other part is that wearing it has become a habit.

Q: In Persona 3, what's with the wound on Akihiko Sanada's forehead? I'm worried because his ribs healed in a month, but the wound on his forehead still hasn't healed after a year.
A: The band-aid on the left side of Sanada's forehead is just to express that "He always has injuries cause he's a boxer". Due to his past, he's the type who wants to train to the extent that he's bullying himself, so it seems he has a lot of fresh wounds on his face.

Episode 18

Q: In P4D, Kanamin's costumes include her plain jersey with a shirt that says "Life" (人生) on it, and it seems like the writing changes when she dances. How many variations are there?
A: 13 total ("Life" + 12 others).

Q: When did Sho Minazuki from P4AU get that scar on his forehead? I thought the story would explain something about it since it glows when his eyes glow, but even after clearing the story, there was no explanation.
A: The scar on his forehead is related to "that one thing" being implanted into his forehead. The blue glow is due to the influence of "that one thing" and the red glow is due to the influence of "the big guy".

Q: I want to know if Shiroku's pet fish Akihiko that's kept at Shiroku Pub is a freshwater fish or seawater fish? The fish itself looks like an oarfish, making it a deep-sea fish that would at least need a tank with seawater. But Inaba is surrounded by mountains and the only sea on the map is Shichiri Beach. I don't think it's that far away because the main characters can go there, but Shiroku runs the general store during the day and the pub at night, so I get the feeling she doesn't have time to go get seawater.
A: If you look into it, there's an "artificial seawater mix" for keeping seawater fish in aquariums as pets and it's very easy to get through mail order.

Episode 19

Q: What's with the distinctive hairstyles on Yosuke's Personas Susano-O and Takehaya Susano-o? Did Yosuke wish he could have an afro?
A: The flashy hair isn't because of Yosuke's heart but because the mythological Susanoo had the image of a tempest and a violent storm. It being red is to communicate that, within the game, Yosuke is not just strong against wind but also strong against fire.

Q: During January in P3P, it's mentioned that Sanada and Mitsuru Kirijo take standardized tests for university admissions. But in P4 Arena, Sanada had been training overseas. Did he drop out?
A: No. As mentioned in the P4 Arena story mode, he was just on leave from school. It was probably his own version of a ritual purification before embarking on the path of fighting as a professional, but even Mitsuru told him, "You're overdoing it".

Q: Why does Ryoji Mochizuki wear a scarf? November seems a bit too early for scarf weather. Does the scarf have a special meaning?
A: Mainly for impact when you first meet him, but also his values are different than other people's, and we were conscious of that - like he's "a foreigner who hasn't gotten used to this town yet".

Episode 20

Q: What do the members of S.E.E.S. in Persona 3 do during the Dark Hour when they aren't exploring Tartarus?
A: They're usually just sleeping for 3 reasons. #1, you can't use any electronics for a long period of time, so you might as well just sleep. #2, people in sports clubs have practice in the morning, and it's rough if they aren't in bed by midnight. #3, it's inefficient to do things during the Dark Hour that you'd do normally because you get fatigued quicker.

Q: Aigis has various weapons, but where on her body does she store spare bullets to reload with?
A: She doesn't carry any spares. In the lore, her drum magazines store 60 rounds, one per arm, for a total of 120 bullets. When she's out of rounds, she probably resupplies at the dungeon entrance. In Arena onwards, Aigis's has a new chassis. The bulkier part of her arm guns store helical magazines that can be preloaded with a quantity of bullets equivalent to the max capacity of the old full size magazine. In fact, even in P4 Arena, she is limited to 120 bullets.

Q: I like the piano piece that plays in Chagall Cafe, but I don't know the name of the song, and I couldn't find it on the OSTs. What is the name, and is it on a CD?
A: It's not a BGM but classified as a sound effect called "Inside of Chagall" that combines the music that the owner Mumon plays in-universe in the store with the sound effects of other customers eating/drinking, etc, as part of the environment. It's not on any soundtracks because it was intentionally processed to sound like it plays through speakers and it's only 30 seconds long.

Episode 23

Q: Why does Junpei wear that hat everywhere he goes? He wears it at dorm, at school, on the beach, even in the hot spring! Is it something sentimental?
A: Simply put, he's a baseball nut. He enthusiastically keeps tabs on the outcomes of not just Japanese pro games, but even Major League Baseball. It might look like he's always wearing the same hat, but he might have a bunch of different versions that just look the same to an amateur. As for wearing it at the beach and in the hot springs, I think he does that because he really believes that being incredibly stubborn is one way to be cool.

Q: It looks like Jin Shirato gets weapons for Strega, but how does he get guns and bullets for Takaya Sakaki? Is it a modified model gun? Does he steal stuff during the Dark Hour?
A: Takaya's gun and bullets are real, but they weren't obtained locally. Strega took them with them when they escaped from the research lab. They have a moderate supply of those things, the Persona suppression drugs, and some other things that they use little by little. They won't be able to restock if they use everything up, but Strega knows they don't have much longer, so they think the supply they have is good enough.

Q: Was there a motorcycle you referenced for Mitsuru's motorcycle?
A: It's not the exact same since it's been modified to work during the Dark Hour, but her motorcycle is modeled off of the limited Ducati MH900e.

Episode 24

Q: The Personas in P3 come from Greek mythology. What were the reasons for each of the character's Persona being selected?
A: For two reasons. Firstly, there are a lot of Greek Gods who are relatively popular and have symbolism that coincides with the game's themes - Thanatos, who represents death itself; Orpheus, who has the so-called "Descent into the Underworld" myth; and many others. The other reason is that the first Persona game was placed as an "Ibunroku" - an "Alternate/Unusual Tale" - in relation to the "Shin Megami Tensei" series. In order to differentiate them, the first Persona game incorporated Greek myths which hadn't been used much in SMT. Persona 2 did the same. Thus, Persona 3 carried on the tradition.

Q: Where does SEES keep their Evokers when they don't go into Tartarus during the Dark Hour?
A: There was no set storage place when they only had a few Persona users. Around the time they began exploring Tartarus, it became a rule to store them in the operations room.

Q: What's with the uniforms on display in Aigis's room in her max Social Link event? Are those uniforms being stored for students? Or are they all spares for Aigis if hers gets torn?
A: As you can tell from the game, they're all the same size, and all look the same; they're all spare uniforms for Aigis. Aigis's form might be similar to a regular human, but her body structure, behavior, temperature/heat, physical abilities, etc, all differ so her uniforms are specially made for her, down to the last detail.

Episode 25

Q: I think that all the awesome music plays a big part in Persona's appeal. There must be discarded songs that were made but never used. Can the Stalker Club skill those pieces with Endure Dark before they get buried in the Mudo of history?!
A: If you made it, then you can find a suitable place for it to play, so there are no pieces that got discarded even though they had been completed. If anything, there are some sad incidents where, due to a change of direction, a BGM no longer fits something, but in such cases, rather than discarding it, it gets recycled to play somewhere appropriate. That said, it is thought that behind one completed song are multiple rough drafts that exist in the form of tunes being hummed. However, the existence of these drafts could not be verified because the composer already Mudo'd them himself.

Q: In P4, Chie's Persona Tomoe is wearing a helmet. Is the helmet shape actually her head, or is she just wearing a helmet?
A: When it comes to a Persona's appearance, there is no clear distinction made between their body and their accessories. But, if one must dare to say which is which, that's a helmet. Since Personas are beings that have transformed from Shadows, they are often designed with a "mask" of sorts similar to the enemy Shadows. And in Tomoe's case, hers is her helmet.

Episode 26

Q: Sanada's Persona Caesar was such a womanizer that he was called "Rome's Lover" and he held a title like "Debt King" which gives him the opposite image of Sanada. How did he go from Polydeuces to Caesar?
A: Because his Arcana is the Emperor. That Caesar was able to fearlessly carry out innovative reforms corresponds with Akihiko's strength. Furthermore, the history of how Caesar lost his standing then made a comeback and became "Emperor"[a] is similar to Sanada's story and so forth.

Q: There are many flavors of protein, such as strawberry, chocolate, etc. What is Sanada's favorite? Or will any do?
A: Sanada takes protein because that's logical to him as both a boxer and as someone who wants to get stronger. Taste barely even registers to him as a deciding factor. I'm certain that if an ingredient was the best for one's strength, he would say, "I'll try it" and put it in his mouth even if it's bitter or spicy.

Q: Why does Sanada never wear his uniform jacket during the game? He doesn't even wear it in winter.
A: Normally, he'd wear it at school and other places, so it's not as though he has a hang-up that causes him to stubbornly refuse to wear it. However, a blazer would restrict his movement when boxing or fighting, so it's more like he's never seen wearing it when interacting with the protagonist. He might seem really extreme at first, living his life like he's ready to fight 24/7, but he has been attacked by a Full Moon Shadow at the dorm where he lives. When you think about that, it doesn't seem so extreme.

V Episode 10

Q: When Makoto Niijima trails Joker around, she’s shown hiding by reading a shonen manga magazine. Is her Persona the result of her reading shonen instead of shojo?
A: Per the Official Design Works, Makoto enjoys reading, regardless of the genre. She reads shojo, sci-fi novels, etc.

Q: Do the protagonists all get enhanced physical ability when inside Palaces and Mementos? Or are they their usual selves in Palaces aside from their clothes?
A: To get straight to the point, their physical ability gets enhanced thanks to their spirit of rebellion.

Q: Yusuke Kitagawa looks great in his yukata during the fireworks part. Did he buy it himself? Also, did he dress himself?
A: It’s not documented anywhere, but I think he bought it himself. Additionally, since Yusuke majors in Japanese-style painting, I imagine he has painted people wearing Japanese clothing before and is well-versed in the subject, so I think he dressed himself.

Q: Why does Yusuke only wear a white shirt with his uniform when Hifumi wears a uniform with a dress shirt and blazer? What about the symbol on his shirt?
A: It’s his own shirt. The symbol is a lily emblem, which is used in Europe to represent royalty. I guess he picked it because he likes it. In Japanese flower language, a black lily communicates “love” and “curses”, hinting at how Yusuke develops during the story. Furthermore, the aforementioned flower language originates from a woman in the Sengoku era whose name was Sayuri. There’s no connection between this and P5, but I do recall later being surprised by the coincidence when I realized it.

Q: What is in Goro Akechi’s attaché case? Did he draw that circled “A” himself?
A: Presumably, it contains his laptop and material related to cases he’s working on. The “A” is the “A” in “Akechi”, and he made it himself. He must want to stand out. At the same time, the “A.” (emphasis on the period) is an expression of his intellect, as if all the “A"nswers to a case can be found within.

Notes

  1. This historical error is also made in the Persona 3 artbook's description of Caesar. As of Reload, his profile now says Caesar later became a name for emperors.
