Tomoe is a Persona in Persona 4. It is the Initial Persona of Chie Satonaka.

Tomoe was a female samurai during the Heian period.

All of the party member's first Personas were chosen for them from Japanese figures based on their storylines. Tomoe was picked for Chie because she has an established image of a woman who fights like a man but you still want to protect her.

Design

Tomoe is somewhat macho-looking as Chie's Persona was designed to reflect her own preferences. The yellow track suit is an homage to one of Chie's favorite martial artists and movie stars, Bruce Lee. Soejima added the motorcycle helmet that covers Tomoe's face because he thinks motorcycles are cool. Tomoe's helmet is actually a helmet with her "face" underneath. Since Personas are transformed Shadows, they wear masks similar to the Shadows, and Tomoe's helmet is her mask.

Gameplay

Persona 4

In Persona 4, Chie starts with Tomoe. It transfigures into Suzuka Gongen upon maxing her Social Link.

Persona 4 Golden

In Golden, Chie starts with Tomoe. It transfigures into Suzuka Gongen upon maxing her Social Link, and can further transfigure into Haraedo-no-Okami during winter.

Persona 4	As a high-ranking female samurai, Tomoe Gonzen was an unusual figure in feudal Japan. When her lover Yoshinaka Minamoto made a bid to become the Minamoto clan leader, she fought to defend him against the other branches of the Minamoto family. However, accounts vary regarding her actions during the final battle in which Yoshinaka died.
