Profile
Akihiko is a third-year student at Gekkoukan High School, and the captain of its boxing team. He was the second member of S.E.E.S. after having been recruited by Mitsuru Kirijo in junior high school. After losing his parents at a young age, Akihiko and his younger sister Miki were placed in an orphanage, where he met his best friend Shinjiro Aragaki. After an orphanage fire that resulted in Miki's death, Akihiko obsessed with becoming stronger, seeing himself as having been too weak to save her.
Akihiko's extracurricular choice is boxing, a sport he has been participating in since at least his junior high school days, and is undefeated in. He accepted Mitsuru's request to join S.E.E.S. initially as another means of building his strength, however also states that he and Shinjiro's ultimate goal was to destroy the Dark Hour.[3]
Personality-wise, Akihiko comes off as practical and determined, aloof but with a "confident air and ambitious attitude".[4] At times, Akihiko is awkward and oblivious, often blunt. At other times, he is impulsive and reckless, particularly when it comes to battle and arguments.
Like most of the cast, Akihiko wears a modified version of the standard Gekkoukan uniform: a white dress shirt with black slacks and neck-tie, with brown Oxfords and black gloves. He carries his Gekkoukan uniform jacket over his shoulder, electing instead for a red sweater-vest over his shirt, emblazoned with a yellow lower-case "b". Akihiko has short light grey-hair. His eye colour ranges from brown to hazel to muted shades of blue and green, but are most often a darker shade of grey to his hair.
According to character designer Shigenori Soejima, Akihiko's initial design concept was "the cool senior".[5]

The Answer
The Answer presents a flashback to Akihiko's recruitment to S.E.E.S. at the end of the second dungeon, Caina. The memory depicts Akihiko at the end of junior high school, being hounded by fangirls and a boxing scout trying to recruit Akihiko to a rival school. Once alone, Akihiko is then approached by Mitsuru Kirijo, who introduces herself as a fellow third-year, and tells him she has enemies that need defeating. She states that the enemies are "related to what you've recently been experiencing each midnight", and that she experiences the same phenomena as he does. After handing him an Evoker, the flashback ends.
