After losing his parents at a young age, Akihiko and his younger sister Miki were placed in an orphanage, where he met his best friend Shinjiro Aragaki. He accepted Mitsuru's request to join S.E.E.S. initially as another means of building his strength, however also states that he and Shinjiro's ultimate goal was to destroy the Dark Hour.[3]

Personality-wise, Akihiko comes off as practical and determined, aloof but with a "confident air and ambitious attitude".[4] At times, Akihiko is awkward and oblivious, often blunt. At other times, he is impulsive and reckless, particularly when it comes to battle and arguments.

Like most of the cast, Akihiko wears a modified version of the standard Gekkoukan uniform: a white dress shirt with black slacks and neck-tie, with brown Oxfords and black gloves. He carries his Gekkoukan uniform jacket over his shoulder, electing instead for a red sweater-vest over his shirt, emblazoned with a yellow lower-case "b". Akihiko has short light grey-hair. His eye colour ranges from brown to hazel to muted shades of blue and green, but are most often a darker shade of grey to his hair.

According to character designer Shigenori Soejima, Akihiko's initial design concept was "the cool senior".[5]
