Jiraiya is a Persona in Persona 4. It is the Initial Persona of Yosuke Hanamura.
Profile
Origin
Jiraiya is a character originating from the 1806-1807 Japanese fiction series, Jiraiya Monogatari (also written Jiraiya Setsuwa). He is a chivalrous thief who aids an orphaned boy get revenge against his father's killer and later learns how to use toad magic from a mountain hermit. This tale was partially inspired by the Chinese story Garaiya. In 1839, Jiraiya Monogatari received a fully illustrated serialization titled Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari. Though unfinished, it is thought to be the more well-known version of Jiraiya which made him more of a heroic figure.
In Persona 4, all of the party member's first Personas were chosen for them from Japanese figures based on their storylines. Jiraiya was picked for Yosuke because Jiraiya is a people of the hero, and having it as a Persona would allow Yosuke to believe himself to be a "chosen one".[1]
Design
Jiraiya was designed based on what Yosuke would imagine when he hears the name, but knowing nothing about him besides "chivalrous thief" and "ninja". Though it was not written into Yosuke's characterization, Soejima personally saw Yosuke as the kind of person who isn't very creative. For example, Yosuke would know that Jiraiya was a chivalrous thief which is like a type of hero, so would think of a red muffler like other fictional heroes. And since Jiraiya was a ninja, he would think of camouflage because ninjas need to be stealthy, but the camouflage pattern is also something that Yosuke likes himself and thinks is cool. Soejima further designed Jiraiya to not have joints, like a poseable rubber doll, to reflect Yosuke viewing it as being like a toy.[2] Jiraiya is also meant to mimic a frog, and shares many design elements with its boss form as Shadow Yosuke; the two black protrusions are supposed to look like a frog's eyes, and the V across its chest resembles a mouth.[3][4] The small holes below the yellow shuriken-like shapes are its real eyes.[5]
Gameplay
In Persona 4, Yosuke starts with Jiraiya. It transfigures into Susano-O upon maxing his Social Link.
In Golden, Yosuke starts with Jiraiya. It transfigures into Susano-O upon maxing his Social Link, and can further transfigure into Takehaya Susano-o during winter.

| Persona 4
|
This Ninja appeared in several Edo-era stories and plays. His toad magic allowed him to control and ride toads, as well as turn into a giant toad himself in some stories. Alongside his wife Tsunade, a devotee of slug magic, he battled the snake-magic wielding Orochimaru, who was once Jiraiya's disciple.
