Origin

In European folklore, Oberon is the king of the fairies.

Oberon is a prominent character in William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, where he is the king of the fairies and the husband of the fairy queen Titania. He is portrayed as a powerful trickster who causes most of the magical chaos in the play to mess with his wife during an argument.

The name Oberon originates from the French epic Huon de Bordeaux where he is an aide to the epic's protagonist. In this epic, he is described as the illegitimate son of Morgan le Fey and Julius Caesar, and is the ruler of a kingdom called Momur. In certain versions of Huon he was instead originally an ugly dwarf named Tronc, who the fairies took pity on and transformed into a beautiful elf named Oberon. They then gave him the throne of the kingdom of Faérie. King Arthur saw himself as the rightful ruler of Faérie and attempted to take it from Oberon, but backed down when the elf king threatened to turn him into a werewolf.

Design

In Shin Megami Tensei, Oberon is a tall and slender young man donning red medieval regal wear and a large crown on his head and two colorful butterfly wings. An ornate blade is fastened to his belt. In the PlayStation version of Shin Megami Tensei, his wings have changed from yellow, green, and blue to black with yellow markings. This design would be carried on to most Oberon's 3d apearences such as Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5.

In Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner, Oberon is portrayed as a portly old man in silver armor, wearing aristocratic clothing underneath. His staff and butterfly wings are to show off his fairy king status. In Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, he was slightly recolored, but the core design remained the same.

After Hiroko falls victim to the Infidelity Sap, Hanoun will tell Oberon about the incident. Oberon will have an audience with Aleph and tell him of Puck's whereabouts, asking him to bring him another sample of the sap. Once the sap is obtained, he uses it to break the spell that Puck placed on Hiroko.
