Profile

Origin

The cherubim, also known as the living creatures, are celestial beings mentioned in the Bible. After Adam and Eve are banished from Eden, God places cherubim at the east side of the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:24). Cherubim are also mentioned in the Book of Ezekiel, which describes their appearance in Chapter 1 and Chapter 10. Chapter 28 mentions a cherub that was in the Garden of Eden as a metaphor for the king of Tyre.

The imagery of the four living creatures from Ezekiel is echoed in chapter 4 of the Christian New Testament's Book of Revelation, though they are never called by the name "cherubim". These creatures also incorporate imagery from the seraphim.

In Exodus 25:18-20 the Ark of the Covenant is adorned with two cherubim made of gold, one at each end of the ark. They are described facing each other with their wings spread upward.

According to Pseudo-Dionysius's On the Celestial Hierarchy, cherubim are the second highest order of angels; Dionysius's work was historically influential in the angelology of the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church.

In Islamic tradition, the Bearers of the Throne of God may be described similarly to seraphim and/or cherubim.

Cherub's initial design appeared in Shin Megami Tensei as a Sphinx-like creature with a feline body, human face, and bird wings coming out of its head. While the body of the Cherub is pale orange, its feathers and mane are green.

Shin Megami Tensei II

Cherubim are statues at the top of the Center's headquarters that guard the entrance to Eden. They will only allow Aleph to enter Eden if he is Law-aligned, welcoming him as the chosen one. On the Neutral and Chaos routes, however, Aleph must wear Houri's robe, which disguises his true alignment and fools the Cherubim into letting him pass.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance

A pair of Cherubim repeatedly block the Nahobino's path while exploring Shinjuku, preventing his progress, first needing to divert their attention by dispatching of a group of Power so that they leave their posts as reinforcements. Later, they block his way to a Magatsu Rail leading to West Shinjuku until Yuzuru Atsuta and Hayao Koshimizu defeat them. The Nahobino is forced to confront another pair in Shakan, however, when they guard the passage to the inner sanctum.

Trivia

• In Shin Megami Tensei II, Ophanim's depiction closely resembles a Cherub as described in the Book of Ezekiel (having the heads of a human, a lion, an ox, and an eagle).
• There is leftover unused data for Cherub as a demon in Shin Megami Tensei: Nine. It is of the Divine race and is level 75.
