Origin

Thrones are an order of angel in from Pseudo-Dionysius's work On the Celestial Hierarchy, taking the name from Colossians 1:16, which mentions that God is the creator of thrones (throni in the Vulgate and θρόνοι thrónoi in the Greek New Testament), dominions, principalities, and powers. Thrones are usually identified with the ophanim (wheels) of God's chariot in the Book of Ezekiel.

Isidore of Seville claims that they are called Thrones because "the Creator 'sits over' (...) them, and discharges his judgments through them."
