Ophanim is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Origin
Ophanim (singular: ophan) are the wheels (ophanim in Hebrew) of God's chariot in the Book of Ezekiel, which are interpreted as a class of angel in later writings. Thrones are often identified with the ophanim.
Design
In Shin Megami Tensei II, Ophanim's design is based on the descriptions of the four living creatures (cherubim) in Chapter 1 and Chapter 10 of the Book of Ezekiel, rather than the description of the ophanim themselves in the same book. The Ophanim of Megami Tensei is depicted as a non-humanoid robot with four bird's wings and four heads: the head of a man with the text "T-OFA" on it at the front, the head of a lion on its left, the head of an ox on its right, and the head of an eagle on its top. According to Kazuma Kaneko, this design's similarities to Ezekiel's living creatures was due to the staff needing to increase the number of demons in the game. This led to the concept being split into two distinct entities.[1]
In Devil Children Black Book and Red Book and Devil Children White Book, Ophanim is a knightly figure with a helmet, halo, large arms, and red angel wings. It carries a three-pronged spear in its right hand, and its lower body is comprised of three red wheels. In Devil Children Light Book and Dark Book and Devil Children Fire Book and Ice Book, it has an orange golem-like upper body with a halo, angel wings, and flaming eyes, while its lower body resembles a rocking horse with four hooves.
