Talk:Teddie
"Scoring"
Because of how the Wiki is JP over ENG Loc, there are some things about Teddie that a player who has only ever played in English is not going to know about him. I am unsure of how to write this in any sane, objective way?
When Yukiko's Shadow appears on TV, she says she's going to "score a stud". This whole phrase is a localization of 逆ナン gyakunan. Gyakunan means "reverse pick-up". As "normal" pickup (ナンパ, nanpa) refers to "guys hitting on girls", "reverse pick-up" thus refers to girls hitting on guys. This is why the English localization very specifically has her say "scoring a stud" - the stud part makes it clear this is meant to be gendered. Early on, Chie asks, "What was all that 'scoring a stud' stuff about?" and Teddie repeats "Scoring a stud?" from her. After this, gyakunan is no longer translated as "scoring a stud" until after they capture Kubo. It's only translated as "scoring", which by itself is not gendered.
So, all of the times Teddie talks about "scoring with Yukiko and Chie", he is actually meant to be saying, "I'm going to [girls hitting on guys] the girls". And the girls absolutely know - it's why Chie is laughing the first time he tries saying it to them. Meanwhile, Yukiko is not annoyed at Teddie thinking he's hitting on her, she's annoyed because she thinks Teddie is doing it on purpose to remind her of her Shadow. This becomes obvious after the kids capture Kubo, and Kanji gets confused by Teddie says "girls hitting on guys", and Yukiko immediately tells him to shut up and "remember the sauna", stating that there are things some people want to forget. (During this convo, the English localization finally goes back to clarifying that it's supposed to be gendered, if only so that Kanji can be confused by why Teddie says it.)
And the bit with Yukiko's reaction I think is kinda key here when you look at how characters interact with one another rather than just in their individual bubbles. After the TV World, Yukiko regularly smacks dudes who thinks she's saying inappropriate stuff to her. This is used as slapstick humor where she misinterprets what Yosuke and Kanji say, but she never once physically lashes out at Teddie until he lands on top of her head in the onsen. Like, she genuinely does not think he's hitting on her.
There is also a part early on where Yukiko's Shadow says something suggestive, and Teddie repeats it from her. In Japanese, Yosuke then asks, "The hell did you repeat that for?", making it clear Yosuke knows Teddie is just repeating things he hears. In English, they omit Yosuke's acknowledgement that Teddie was imitating her. Furthermore, in the optional non-party member dungeon conversations, Chie confronts Teddie over his behavior with Nanako, asking if he's really pursuing a child like her. Teddie says he doesn't fully understand what Chie means, but clarifies he is only interested in picking-up the older girls, this time using ナンパ, and showing he is aware of what these words are supposed to mean now.
As you can see with Arena and whatever, Teddie ends up being flandarized as "Dude Horny" regardless (personally, I want to punch him), but the way his character is supposed to come off especially early on feels quite different between both languages?
