Susano-o is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Susano-o is the Shinto god of the sea and storms and younger brother of the sun goddess Amaterasu and the moon god Tsukuyomi and son of Izanagi, being born when Izanagi purified his nose after leaving Yomotsu Hirasaka. Susano-o cried for his mother Izanami until his beard grew to full length, with his wails sowing destruction across the land. He is characterised as tempestuous, rebellious and feared for his violence though also regarded as a heroic figure.

Susano-o once sought to meet with Amaterasu who was suspicious of his intentions, challenging him to a trial in which they bit items belonging to the other and spiting out deities, with Amaterasu taking his sword into three before chewing and spitting out three goddesses while Susano-o in turn chewed on her magatama beads and spat out five gods. With the gods taken from the owner of the item Susano-o was declared the victor. Susano-o rioted in triumph with such violence that he laid waste to Amaterasu's palace, ultimately killing one of Amaterasu's maidens when her threw the flayed corpse of one of his sisters horses. Enraged Amaterasu retreated into a cave, depriving the world of the sun until Ame-no-Uzume's dance drew her out. As punishment Susano-o was banished with his beard and nails cut from his body.

After his banishment, Susano-o wandered the land until he encountered an elderly couple that had lost seven of their eight daughters to the serpent Yamata-no-Orochi, who was coming to eat their eighth daughter Kushinada-Hime. Expressing sympathy, Susano-o swore to slay Orochi by first transforming Kushinada-Hime into a comb to hide her, then acquiring eight lots of sake. When Orochi arrived, he consumed all the sake and became so intoxicated that Susano-o was able to decapitate each of it's eight heads with ease. From within the serpents tail Susano-o found the Murakumo, which he offered to Amaterasu to atone for his crimes against her. For his deed Amaterasu restored him to the heavens and Kushinada-Hime was married to him in gratitude.

Susano-o is deceased by the time the game begins, having been killed in the battle of Armageddon.[1] In order to compensate for the massive loss in power within the Japanese branch of Bethel, Hayao Koshimizu mass produced the Proto-fiends to bolter their forces as the Proto-fiends are born from the essence of Izanagi.[2]

This section contains spoilers. (Skip Section)

In reality, Koshimizu was the god Tsukuyomi in the body of a logistic type Proto-fiend. Through the uses of the Awagihara System, Tsukuyomi sought to restore his brother Susano-o to life in the body of a Proto-fiend[3][4]. This ultimately led to the Aogami unit that fused with the Nahobino, who was considered the resurrected form of Susano-o by Tsukuyomi.[5][6]

End of spoilers.
