Angel is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Angels^[a] are messengers of God in Abrahamic religions. In both Hebrew and Greek, the word used for "angel" can also be used for human messengers. Named angels such as Michael who play special roles are often called archangels.

This demon specifically represents the third order of the third hierarchy of angels in Pseudo-Dionysius's On the Celestial Hierarchy. Dionysius uses the term "angel" both in a general sense of any celestial being other than God, and in the narrow sense of the specific order of messengers of God to humans; he justifies his use of "angel" (messenger) in a general sense by saying each order makes known divine illumination to the lower orders sequentially.

The standard Jewish and Islamic view is that angels do not have free will and solely act by God's command. Christianity, however, typically allows for the idea of personal autonomy for angels: Satan is often considered a fallen angel (though never directly called as such in scripture), and in the New Testament, Satan is said to have his own angels (Matthew 25:41, Revelation 12:9). This idea of fallen angels and Satan being one of them originated in some strains of Jewish thought during the Second Temple period. Some narrations involving fallen angels do appear in the Talmud (such as the incident of Uzza and Azael) and in some aggadic and mystical Jewish works, but these stories are not normative in Rabbinic Jewish theology. Iblis, the Islamic equivalent of Satan, is of the jinn and not an angel.

Design

In Shin Megami Tensei V, the Angel was redesigned by Masayuki Doi to better suit their role in the story. Their clothing, wings, and halo were all inspired by recurring motifs in religious paintings. The mask was intended to convey the Angel's puppet-like loyalty towards YHVH. The Angel's facial features, voice, and body were made purposefully contrastive to reflect the sexual ambiguity of angels in mythology. Some of their animations were designed to look regal, while others were intended to mimic the movements of a broken puppet.^[1]

Game Appearances

Angel appears starting on the 2nd floor of Mecha Fortress, floor 27 overall. They stick to one spot and lob their ball and chain at the jack brothers, and periodically disappear and reappear. While seemingly out of reach, attacking the ball and chain will hurt and defeat Angel. It is implied by Pixie that they oppose the Jack brothers out of boredom.

Pixie says the following on the floor in which they are first encountered:

This is Angel's floor. ... Why is Angel here? I think Angel was bored and ended up here. Hit the ball and chain to attack Angel.

Trivia

In Kazuma Kaneko Graphics: Megami Tensei Mokushiroku, Kazuma Kaneko says it is possible that Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner's Angel has a penis.^[2]
