Origin
Iblis[a] is a jinni in Islam who is a figure comparable to Satan from Judaism and Christianity. Refusing God's command to bow down to Adam, this is usually interpreted as arrogance. Iblis tempts mankind and is the leader of the shayatin, and is also called ash-Shaytan ("the Shaytan").[b]

Nomenclature
Traditionally, Islamic scholars derive the name Iblis from the Arabic triconsonantal root b-l-s ("to despair"), with the meaning that he despairs in the face of God's mercy. Western linguists generally prefer to derive it from the Greek διάβολος diábolos (whence also the English word "devil").
