Essences are a mechanic in Shin Megami Tensei V.

Overview

Essences are a type of item associated with a demon, containing that demon's skill list and their resistances. In the World of Shadows, the Nahobino can use acquired Essences on himself or any of his demons via Apotheosis, allowing them to instantly learn some of the skills in that Essence. Initially, only the demon's inherent skills can be learned, but the "Art of Essences" series of Miracles expand the amount of accessible skills. Additionally, once the Nahobino learns the Divine Amalgamation Miracle, he is able to overwrite his own resistances with those of an Essence.

Any action involving an Essence consumes it, and the Nahobino can only hold one of each Essence at a time. They may be acquired as level up gifts from a demon, in Negotiation, as drops from enemy demons, as Quest rewards, from Treasure Chests, or purchased from Cadaver's Hollow.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance

Essences do not contain a demon's Innate skill.

Instead of Treasure Chests, Aogami Essences are acquired from Aogami Husks. These are placed in fixed locations and refresh over time.
