Artemis[a] is the Greek goddess of hunting, wilderness, animals and chastity.[1] Her symbols are deer, bows and arrows, and moon. She is the daughter of Zeus and Leto, who was forbidden from giving birth on anywhere on land by Hera in retaliation for Zeus' infidelity, forcing Leto to bare the children until she arrived on an island which was neither connected to the mainland or ocean floor, contested by ancient sources as the island of Delos, Ortygia, or the Paximadia, where Artemis and her twin brother Apollo were born. Her Roman equivalent is Diana where she was conflated with the lunar goddess Selene, and in Egyptian culture she was identified as the goddess Bastet.
Artemis is revered as a hunter with her primary weapon being a bow, a symbol shared with her brother Apollo. She travelled the wilderness of Greece along with an entourage of hunters primarily comprised of nymphs. As one of the virgin goddesses of Olympus, Aphrodite had no power over her and her hunters were sworn to chastity, with multiple myths revolve around this aspect of her identity. Major myths involving her include that of Calisto, a nymph companion, was raped by Zeus, she attempted to hide the following pregnancy from Artemis out of fear and shame but was found and banished for breaking her oath of chastity. There are also multiple myths where men saw her naked as she bathed; in the tale of Siproites, he was spared but transformed into a woman, but when Actaeon saw her bathe and in some versions attempting to force himself on the goddess she cursed him to transform into a stag to be killed by either his own hounds or those of Artemis.
The most renowned myth involving Artemis is the multiple variations of myth of Orion, with all versions have Orion as a hunting companion of Artemis. The first variation has him threaten to kill all creatures, resulting in him being killed by a scorpion sent by an angered Gaia. The second has Apollo, enraged by the relationship between the two, bait Artemis into unknowingly shooting Orion. The third has Orion attempt to rape Artemis, wherein the goddess kills him in retaliation.
Design
The statue Artemis' early designs were based on
Artemis's design from Kyūyaku Megami Tensei appears to be based on the statue formerly located at the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus. She appears as a tall woman with many exposed breasts, green eyes, and blonde hair with her arms outstretched, which have detached see-through sleeves. She wears a Greek high hat[2] with large circular earrings, and black skirted pants with white frills and an intricate belt design.
The design used in Shin Megami Tensei: Nine, which is a recolor of Diana's design from Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, is based on this statue as well.[3] She now appears as a bow-wielding blue and pale white figure with a cross satchel strap across her torso. She has the same exposed breasts motif, with them appearing on her head, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles.
In Shin Megami Tensei V, Artemis appears as a young golden-skinned huntress with short blonde hair and green eyes. She wears a white dress with a blue cape and silver shoulder pads, and silver boots that have stars on her ankles, with her right boot having a thigh-high covering beneath it, along with fingerless gloves and a belt. On her head, she wears a headband with a star motif on either side with an accessory of a crescent moon sticking out of the top. Her right wrist contains a retractable crossbow, and this same arm has an arm bracelet.

A goddess of hunting and virginity appearing in Greek mythology, who is said to be a twin of the sun god Apollo. She bears the title "Goddess Who Rains Down Arrows" and is also recognized as a bringer of pestilence and death. Artemis fell in love with Orion, son of Poseidon, but Apollo, who was displeased by this, tricked Artemis into shooting Orion dead. It is said that, in order to comfort his daughter, Zeus raised Orion into the heavens and made him into a constellation.
