A Tarot de Marseille Devil cardA Rider-Waite-Smith Devil card
In tarot, the Devil is the fifteenth of the 21 trump cards, which are called "Major Arcana" in esoteric usage. The imagery originates from Italian tarocchi decks. The Devil card typically features the Devil as a horned and winged figure with one hand raised, often accompanied by two demons chained to the pedestal on which the Devil stands. The Devil, or Satan, is a major figure associated with temptation and sin in the Christian religion.
The Rider-Waite-Smith deck incorporates imagery borrowed from Éliphas Lévi's Sabbatic Goat.
Arthur Edward Waite lists the following divinatory meanings in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot: "Ravage, violence, vehemence, extraordinary efforts, force, fatality; that which is predestined but is not for this reason evil. Reversed: Evil fatality, weakness, pettiness, blindness."[1]
