In tarot, the Temperance is the fourteenth of the 21 trump cards, which are called "Major Arcana" in esoteric usage. The imagery originates from Italian tarocchi decks. The Temperance card typically features a woman or angel mixing wine with water; this was a common depiction of temperance as a cardinal virtue in Renaissance art.
Arthur Edward Waite lists the following divinatory meanings in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot: "Economy, moderation, frugality, management, accommodation. Reversed: Things connected with churches, religions, sects, the priesthood, sometimes even the priest who will marry the Querent; also disunion, unfortunate combinations, competing interests."[1]
