Hathor is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Origin
Hathor[a] was the consort of Horus in the ancient Egyptian religion, and she was believed to help the souls of the departed cross into the afterlife with iconography associating her with cattle, traditionally depicted as a woman with a pair long cow horns with a sun disk between them, thick shoulder length hair tucked behind her ears which are in some depictions bovine, and an uraeus snake on her head. She is also depicted as a cow with the same sun disk and uraeus on her head. Originally a sky deity, she became associated with the sun and by proxy the god Ra, being among the gods that accompanied Ra on his barque. She was also identified as an Eye of Ra, serving both as Ra's feminine aspect and his protector. When humanity turned away from Ra and rebelled against him, Ra sent Hathor in the form of Sekhmet to punish them for their hubris. However as Sekhmet her blood lust was unquenchable and she refused to stop even when Ra commanded her to relent, requiring the gods to trick Sekhmet by flooding the Nile with red died alcohol which she drank believing it was blood until she so too drunk to remain conscious, pacifying her and thus returned to the form of Hathor. Egyptian culture celebrated and remembered this myth through festivals of dancing and drinking to appease Hathor.
Hathor's relationship with Horus predates his mythological connections with other deities, with some incarnations of mythology having her act as his mother rather than Isis, though this was largely forgotten as culture progressed and Isis was codified as his true mother. However the connection was maintained as she was codified as his wife, having healed him after he lost his eye in his battles with Seth with either the milk of a gazelle or her own breast depending on the myth and mothering multiple godly children with him. These aspects reflected her nature as a goddess of love and sex, having the name "Mistress of Love" and receiving prayers that one may find love. Though the myth itself is lost, there are various allusions to a story in which a lock of Hathor's hair is cut which is treated as comparable to the mutilation of Horus' eye in severity, as it diminished her sexual power.[1] The hairstyle of Hathor itself is notable, being unofficially named the "Hathor hair-do" by archeologists for it's connection to the goddess. The hairstyle itself is two thick locks of shoulder length hair, one on either side of her head, parted down the middle with the hair tucked behind her ears.
