Gogmagog is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Gogmagog, known as Goemagot or Goemagog in earlier manuscripts, is a giant first attested in Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia regum Britanniae ("History of the Kings of Britain"); Geoffrey claimed his book was translated from texts written in the British tongue (i.e. a Brittonic language), though modern scholarship believes that much of the material is original to him. According to Geoffrey, Gogmagog was a giant in Totnes, Devon who was slain by the Trojan warrior Corineus, whom Cornwall was supposedly named after.

The name Gogmagog is most likely originally unrelated to Gog and Magog from the Bible, and many scholars believe that the name is a corruption of a Brittonic name. Peter Roberts in 1811 proposed the name is derived from the Welsh Cawr-Madog, meaning "giant Madog". However, the true etymology remains uncertain.

Later tradition split Gogmagog into two giants named Gog and Magog, and recast them as the guardians of London. Statues of Gog and Magog are present at the Guildhall in London, and Gog and Magog are also part of the Lord Mayor's Show every year.

Design

Gogmagog was based on the "Great Martian God," a prehistoric cave painting documented by Henri Lhote in the Tassili n'Ajjer region of the Sahara Desert.
