Azazel is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Origin
"Azazel"[a] originates as a term used in chapter 16 of the Book of Leviticus. The chapter describes a ritual to be performed annually on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) in which the Israelite high priest was to take two goats: one goat was to be a sin-offering to YHWH, and the other was to be cast out into the wilderness to Azazel. According to Judit M. Blair (2009), Azazel was a symbolic personification of the "forces of chaos that threaten the order of creation".[1] Along with the interpretation as a personal entity, Azazel has also been interpreted as the name of the place where the goat was sent, or as a word referring the goat itself; the latter is the interpretation used in several influential translations such as the Septuagint, the Latin Vulgate, and the King James Version (which translates the phrase literally meaning "to Azazel" as "as the scapegoat").
The Ethiopic version of Enoch uses Azazel[b] as a name of a fallen angel who taught men to make swords. However, the Aramaic and Greek versions of Enoch call this angel Asael and Azael, respectively.[2]
Azazel[c] also appears as the name of a fallen angel in the Apocalypse of Abraham,[3] a Jewish text written during the 1st century[4] which survives only in a Slavonic translation.[5] In this text, Azazel is identified as the Adversary (Satan), which in this case refers to God's "eschatological opposite".[6] Azazel was the one who tempted Eve to eat the fruit in the Garden and Cain to kill his brother.[7]
Some Rabbinic Jewish literature such as Targum Pseudo-Jonathan interprets the Israelites' dedication of the goat to Azazel as being a dedication to Satan. Specifically, Pseudo-Jonathan states that the goat is dedicated so that Satan may not speak against Israel for the goat slaughtered by Joseph's brothers to trick their father Jacob.[8] In this passage, Satan is to be interpreted as the heavenly accuser rather than as the fallen angel described in the Apocalypse of Abraham.
