Origin

Pottery depicting Aphrodite riding a goose (c. 460 BC)

Aphrodite[a] is the Greek goddess of sexuality. She has several epithets, including Cythereia ("of Cythera"), Cypris ("of Cyprus"), Urania ("heavenly"), Pandemos ("of all the people"), and, in Sparta, Areia ("warlike"). She was renowned for her beauty, with Helen recognising the goddess in disguise by the beauty of her neck and eyes, and her power gave her the ability to manipulate even the likes of Zeus, though the virgin goddesses Athena, Artemis and Hestia were exempt from her power.

Aphrodite is given two main genealogies in Greek mythology. The first, given by Homer, is that Aphrodite is the daughter of Zeus[1] and Dione;[2] the second is found in Hesiod's Theogony, which states that she was born from the seafoam which spread from Uranus's severed genitals.[3] Though she was married to Hephaestus, she had frequent affairs with his brother Ares, resulting in her mothering his children Phobos, Deimos, and Harmonia.[4] In retaliation for her adultery, Hephaestus created an invisible but unbreakable net that trapped the pair when they next have sex on his bed, displaying them to the other Olympians as humiliation for days until Hephaestus released them.[5] With the Trojan prince Anchises, she is the mother of the hero Aeneas.[6]

In a famous myth, Aphrodite is judged the most beautiful of the goddesses by the Trojan prince Paris in exchange for the Spartan queen Helen's hand in marriage; Paris's elopement with Helen sparks the Trojan War, and in the following conflict Aphrodite favours the Trojans.

It is thought that Aphrodite has significant Near Eastern influence from Astarte and Ishtar.

She was identified as one and the same as the Roman deity Venus.
