According to Norse tales, Sleipnir is an eight-legged horse that is Odin's steed. He is the son of Loki, who was transformed into a mare, and the stallion Svaðilfari. A jötunn builder offered to build a fortress for the Æsir, but demands Freyja, the sun, and the moon as payment. The Æsir agree on the condition that he have no help and that he must finish building within three seasons. With thanks to Loki, the builder is allowed to have the aid of his horse Svaðilfari. Despite these restrictions the builder is able to build the fortress with remarkable speed, and realising that they may have to abide by the terms of the agreement they blame Loki for allowing the aid of Svaðilfari, threatening him with death if he cannot disrupt the construction. To achieve this and escape the Æsir's wrath, Loki transforms into a mare and seduces Svaðilfari, disrupting the builders work long enough for the deadline to pass. Enraged by the Æsir's trickery the jötunn transforms into his true form and attacks, only to be killed by Thor. As a result of his seduction however Loki becomes pregnant and gives birth to Sleipnir.
