Zhu Yin,[a] also known as Zhu Long,[b] is a creature mentioned in the Classic of Mountains and Seas[c] that lives on Bell Mountain.[d] It has a human face and scarlet, serpentine body, long enough to wrap around mountains, with eyes as straight as chariots. When it opens it eyes, day breaks; when it closes its eyes, night falls; when it breathes, summer comes. When it calls, the rain and wind come. It does not eat, nor does it sleep. According to Guo Po, it signifies the nine yin, the major compass directions.[1][2]
Design
Ming dynasty illustration of Zhu Yin
Zhu Yin's design in most appearances is heavily stylised from its nature as a mountain; ergo, it differs significantly from traditional illustrations featuring its human face.
In Megami Ibunroku Persona, Zhu Yin is depicted as a large blue flame with a disembodied yellow eye and a golden mask for a face. The mask depicts a human-like face and has two red tassels attached via circular accessories.
In Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, Zhu Yin is depicted as a green, winged snake with a red underbelly and a mask depicting a human-like face. Its neck is red and fringed with gold.
A snake god that controls daylight and the weather. He has the face of a human, but his eyes are vertical.
He lives in the mountains of northern China, wrapped around them with his crimson body. He does not eat, sleep or breathe. It is day when his eyes are open and night when they close. If he blows, it becomes winter, and if he inhales it becomes summer.
