Origin

Chi You, also known as Chi Jiang, is a legendary leader of the Jiuli tribe mentioned in Records of the Grand Historian. He led a rebellion against Huang Di alongside Yan Di during the Three Soverigns and Five Emperors era. In total, Chi You won nine separate battles, with Huang Di and Yan Di unable to defeat him alone. Huang Di invented a south-pointing chariot to gain the upper hand and joined forces to gain the upper hand in a 10th and final battle and called upon the drought-bringer Nüba. Forced to retreat, Chi You was wiped out, and his head buried far away from his body.

It was from Chi You's tribe that the San Miao people descended, who would go on to found a kingdom around the Dongting lake; they would rebel against Emperor Yao and eventually be brought down by Yu the Great in a 30+ year war, defined as one of the Four Criminals.

Chi You is venerated as a deity amongst the modern-day Hmong people who descend from his tribe, who consider him an ancestral deity akin to Huang Di and Han Chinese. Additionally, Qin Shi Huang worshipped Chi You as a war deity, mainly because Huang Di and Yan Di could not defeat him alone - therefore, in Qin Shi Huang's eyes, it made sense to garner favour with Chi You to unite China. He is sometimes associated with Taotie of the Four Perils. In the Classic of Mountains and Seas, Yinglong is said to have slain him.

Design

Chi You has the Chinese character 武 (of or relating to war) on his armor, and the character 王 (king) on his shield.
