Origin
The martichora[a] (derived from a Persian word for "man-eater"),[b] according to Ctesias, a Greek writer from the 5th century BC, is a lion-sized, red-furred beast with three rows of sharp teeth, a face and ears like that of a human, and a scorpion's stinger on its tail which can be fired at prey and regrown. It lives in India (i.e. the region around the Indus River under Persian control), and one was supposedly given as a gift to the Persian emperor.[1][2] Pliny the Elder instead places the mantichora in Aethiopia in his Natural History.[3]
As far back as Pausanias in the 2nd century AD, the manticore has been thought to be an exaggerated account of a tiger.[4]
