Bunrei
Bunrei is a concept in the Shin Megami Tensei series.
Profile
Bunrei is a technical term in the Shinto religion, which refers to a divided portion of a kami's spirit to be enshrined in a separate location. This process does not diminish the authority of the deity, and the newly established branch shrine can perform the same function as the original.[1][2]
In the Megami Tensei franchise, the term bunrei is used broadly to refer to gods who act as extensions of other deities, and on occasion, gods who represent the same concepts. For example, the angels can be considered bunrei to YHVH, because they act on his behalf as messengers.[3][4][5] A bunrei relationship between gods is sometimes considered analogous to a familial relationship between humans, such as siblings or parent and child.[6] In the book Shin Megami Tensei IV Final Kōshiki Settei Shiryōshū + Shinwa Sekai e no Tabi, it is stated that all Demons can be considered bunrei of the Axiom.[7]
Game Appearances
Shin Megami Tensei II
YHVH refers to Sabaoth, Shaddai, and Elohim as his bunrei.[8]
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne
In the Japanese version of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, the Zoa race is instead titled Bunrei, implying that Luvah, Tharmas, Urizen, and Urthona are bunrei of Albion.
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
The Mothers are bunrei of Mem Aleph. Ouroboros Maia, Tiamat, and Maya are concrete incarnations of regional mother goddesses influenced by human perception, while Mem Aleph is the abstract concept of the great mother goddess.[9]
Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse
After his loss to Nanashi, Odin questions whether it was possible for him to defeat Dagda as one of his bunrei. However, Dagda tells Odin that he didn't lose because he was a bunrei, he lost because he challenged him and his Godslayer.[10] Odin also states that Dagda should have known whether he was truly alive or dead, because he is his bunrei.[11]
Danu is a bunrei of the mother goddess Inanna.[6] Inanna demands that Danu relinquish her power so she can regain her former status.[12][13]

Satan, and by extension, Jonathan and Walter as Merkabah and Lucifer, are bunrei of YHVH. After his defeat at the hands of Nanashi, all of his bunrei return to the Axiom.[14][15][16]
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance
In Shinjuku, Agrat uses bunrei, localized as projections, in order to attack the Nahobino.[17][18] The projection Mastema uses to communicate with the Nahobino in Shinjuku is also referred to as a bunrei.[19]
A Bethel researcher states that the existence of Essences proves that bunrei actually exist and compares the concept to a serial number for Proto-fiends.[20]

Bunrei is a concept that is first mentioned by Archangel Gabriel in Shibuya, she says that Bael's soul was fragmented into many beings and that Ayato Katsuragi is one of those beings, that he carries that fragment of Bael within him and if he dies that fragment will go back to Bael, making him even more powerful. She also tells Katsuragi that was Bael was once known as Baal and that he was defeated by God and that he tore his soul apart. Baal in hell devoured those fragments of his soul, regaining his power and returning to earth.
Bunrei is also mentioned by Marduk the Deity. Marduk was once Yoshio Nishino and that when he escaped from Hatsudai Shelter he was killed by a demon and that was when Marduk met Nishino, he accepted being his Bunrei and revived him, but Nishino was killed once again by Astarte the Tyrant at Gokokuji Temple and that he now could only be revived by fusing soul and mind with him, so Nishino was now revived by Marduk, but not as Nishino, but as Marduk.
Soul Hackers 2
Flamma is referred to as a bunrei of Aion. Unlike Ringo and Figue who are closer to humans, Flamma has no material body and is genderless.[22]
Trivia
- The term bunrei is occasionally used by Demons to refer to duplicate versions of themselves, e.g., when the player successfully negotiates with a demon already within their party.[23][24][25]
- In Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, Metatron and Demiurge are not explicitly called bunrei of YHVH, but are referred to as "a part of" God or the sacred spirit multiple times.[26][27][28] Similarly, in Shin Megami Tensei IV, Ancient of Days is only referred to as "a part of God".[29][30]
- When completing the False God in Chains Mission, if the player is Law-aligned and already has Demiurge in their stock, Demiurge will refer to the other instance of himself as his bunrei.[23]
- In the PlayStation and Game Boy Advance ports of Shin Megami Tensei II, Kuzuryu is listed as a member of the Godly Race alongside Sabaoth, Shaddai, and Elohim, which may be implying that it is also considered a bunrei of YHVH. Kuzuryu was originally referred to as a Godly demon in the book Shin Megami Tensei II Akuma Dai Jiten, which explicitly describes the Race as being comprised of alter-egos and aspects of God.[31]
- The book Shin Megami Tensei IV World Analyze suggests that if the Archangels were created as God's Bunrei, that they would innately understand his will.[33]

In the Celtic world, the druids saw Dagda as the forefather of sorcerers, but this was different for the Norse people or the Germanic culture. The people of each civilisation would see things as it fit them, so we got Odin instead. ‘Bunrei’ are born like this, but then again, treating Dagda and Odin as identical is wrong. Their powers and responsibilities are different, so it’s better for them to be thought of as different entities. Let’s have a look at YHVH: when he was born, humans perhaps observed YHVH himself, but once the scriptures were written, Uriel would be the one to be noticed and maybe that’s why he made so many appearances in their pages. Uriel frequently appearing as YHVH’s messenger also kind of feels like an accessory that comes to the front in order to preserve YHVH’s solemnity. But that is the result of the perception of later people, so we can also say that Uriel is a part [bunrei] of YHVH."
