Dagda is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

The Dagda is a major god and king of the Tuatha Dé Danann in medieval Irish folklore and presumably the pre-Christian Irish faith. He is god of knowledge, fertility, magic, strength and druids. He is married to the Irish war goddess the Mórrígan and is the father of Brigid. His name means "the good god" and he has the title of Eochaid Ollathair, which means "Horseman Great-Father." It is hypothesised by some that Danu is the mother of The Dagda, however the lack of historical records of Danu brings this interpretation into question.

He is depicted as giant with a long beard wearing a hooded cloak and is associated with Brú na Bóinne, modern day Newgrange, which is a neolithic tomb which is constructed so that the sun from the winter solstice may illuminate the interior structure. He hold three magical items; Lorg Mór, an oak staff or club with the dual power to kill anything that touches one end and the inverse power to revive the dead with the other, Úaithne, a magic harp that he could summon to his hand by speaking its name and immobilise any that heard it's music, and the Coire Ansic, a cauldron that never emptied and was considered one of the four treasures of the Tuatha Dé Danann. His red hair is noted in multiple of his titles, including Aed ("Fiery One") and Ruadh Rofhessa ("Red Man of Great Knowledge").

Due to the primary recording of Irish mythology coming from Christian sources, there are aspects of myth regarding The Dagda where the legitimacy has been brought into question. He is characterised at times as oafish and dimwitted, and having a comically oversized penis which he drags across the ground. While The Dagda is identified as a god of fertility, some historians theorise this was an attempt at demonizing the Irish gods and delegitimising the culture and religion.

Design

Dagda was designed by Masayuki Doi for Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, and in order to match the narrative of the game Doi emphasised Dagda's control over life and death. He resembles a human wearing greyish-green armour on his body with his skeletal hands exposed and a cape torn in half at his back. His head is covered by a helmet with a golden question mark on his forehead. His eyes are emerald green and resemble that of a human, the cheeks of the helmet are exposed to reveal a skeletal mouth, and his red hair surrounds his entire head and connects to his head. He wears a large golden belt around his waist with a large Celtic triskelion at its center. On his collar is a golden emblem of a four-leaf clover contrasting with Danu's three-leaf shamrock symbolizing his rejection of Christianity as the shamrock is associated with the Holy Trinity.

Dagda first appears in Yomotsu Hirasaka after Nanashi is killed by Adramelech and his forces. He offers to revive the recently deceased boy in exchange for him becoming his Godslayer.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance

Dagda appears in the DLC sidequest "Holy Will and Profane Dissent". Implied to come from a universe similar to that of Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, possibly even the same incarnation as the one from said game, Dagda used forbidden magic to cross realities, resulting in him appearing in Da'at with his mother Danu pursuing him. When the Nahobino investigates the spatial disturbance caused by the two crossing realities, he encounters Danu who explains that both she and Dagda are from another universe and that Dagda refused to be bound by the will of his mother or to serve humanity, leading him to use the forbidden magic of the Tuatha Dé Danann to escape their reality. Lacking the power to reign in Dagda herself, Danu requests for the Nahobino to find him with a warning that Dagda will likely react to any attempt to stop him with hostility.

Dagda is encountered in person at Nagatacho at the cliff overlooking the Tokyo Diet Building. Dagda immediately senses the Nahobino and expresses his frustration with being unable to escape from his existence and lamenting that this world is no different from the one he abandoned with demons being restricted by the Knowledge of humans. However, he then recognises that unlike his universe that Knowledge once belonged to demons and sees a new opportunity to escape the influence of humanity and define his own existence. Initially thinking to find his own Knowledge and be free of all other influence, he instead thinks to restore Knowledge to all demons, and attacks the Nahobino so that no one can oppose him.

After being defeated Danu appears and requests that the Nahobino deal the killing blow so that he may be reborn into a leader of humanity, to which Dagda defiantly eggs on while expressing his anger over her attempts to shape him into the "good god" and laments the state of their existence. The Nahobino has the choice to kill Dagda as requested or to spare him. Should they kill him, Dagda's essence is returned to Danu who expresses sadness that her son turned away from humanity and expresses that Dagda may change as he desired due to how humans perceive him, however they cannot afford to in their current state. Thanking the Nahobino she returns to her universe, leaving the Oak Staff where Dagda fell. When the Nahobino returns to the Tokyo Diet Building, a Bethel Researcher will be able to use the Oak Staff to summon a version of Dagda to join their party. However, if the Nahobino spares Dagda then Danu will react in shock, and claims that the acceptance of this rebellious form of Dagda means that she cannot exist in this universe and returns to her own. Dagda while perplexed by the Nahobino's choice nonetheless expresses interest and joins them as an ally. When speaking to the Bethel Researcher, they note that due to him coming from another universe it is unlikely that he will find his Knowledge in this universe.

Last Chronicle

Dagda is one of the characters featured in the crossover with the Japanese trading card game Last Chronicle. His card, featuring an illustration drawn by Ikumi Fukuda, was released in the Rebel Contract Deck, which also featured illustrations of Nanashi, Walter, and Jonathan.

• Datamines suggest Dagda was originally meant to appear in Shin Megami Tensei V before being scrapped.
