El Shaddai,[a] or simply Shaddai, is a title applied to YHVH in the Hebrew Bible and Christian Old Testament, and it is traditionally translated into other languages as "God Almighty", with this convention dating back to the 2nd century BCE with the translation of the Bible into Greek; however, it was not translated consistently so until Jerome's Vulgate. The understanding as "almighty" is probably derived from interpretation of Shaddai as coming from the verb שָׁדַד šāḏaḏ, meaning "to destroy" or "to overpower".

Rabbinic Jewish tradition has interpreted El Shaddai as meaning "God who is enough"[b] or "god of breasts"[c]—i.e., a nurturing god. Modern scholarship has proposed that it may mean "god of the mountains" (comparing Shaddai with Akkadian šadû) or "god of the wilderness".[d][1]

Design

Shaddai is depicted as a sphere of water with an eye and wearing a crown. According to Kazuma Kaneko, its identification with water is meant to allude to its role as the origin of life.[2]

Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2

One of the names of God that appears in the Old Testament. While its original meaning is unclear, it is most commonly translated into English as God Almighty. In the Book of Genesis, Abraham, father of the Israelites, is said to have sworn himself to Shaddai in exchange for his descendants being given the land of Canaan. Based on the Kabbalah school of thought from Jewish mysticism, this name can also be interpreted as referring to Yesode, one of the ten sephirah.

Shaddai is an avatar of YHVH, and is found in the Ark on the Neutral and Chaos routes. When Aleph encounters it, it calls his very existence blasphemous as an artificial life and attacks his party, to which it is defeated.
