The Hierophant is an Arcana in the Persona series. It is the fifth numbered card in the Major Arcana, numbered V5, following the Emperor and preceding the Lovers.

In tarot, the Hierophant is the fifth of the 21 trump cards, which are called "Major Arcana" in esoteric usage. The imagery originates from Italian tarocchi decks, where it was called il Papa ("the pope"). The Hierophant card typically features a seated pope wearing the papal regalia giving a blessing to by two monks; the papal insignia of the Keys of St. Peter is also visible. The pope, as the visible head of the Roman Catholic Church, was and still is an important religious figure, and in the Middle Ages and Early Modern period, the pope wielded significant secular power as well. Some decks such as the Tarot de Besançon and Swiss 1JJ replace the Pope with the Roman god Jupiter, and the Tarot Flamand replaces it with the Greco-Roman god Bacchus.
Arthur Edward Waite lists the following divinatory meanings in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot: "Marriage, alliance, captivity, servitude; by another account, mercy and goodness; inspiration; the man to whom the Querent has recourse. Reversed: Society, good understanding, concord, overkindness, weakness."[1]
