Design
Yama is designed in a Chinese style.[1]
In his Super Famicom artwork, Yama carries a sword with a rounded tip which resembles a spirit tablet.[1] In his PlayStation artwork, he instead carries a wooden grave tablet, and it is inscribed with the Chinese phrase 度一切苦厄. This is a quote from the Heart Sutra and means "deliver from all sorrow and suffering".[2][3]

Game Appearances
Yama is the warden of Sugamo Prison and judges felons before deciding their innocence. If found guilty, convicts will be sent to prison cells to await their sentence. Though his judgments are claimed to be fair, they are actually biased toward Chaos.
When the Hero trespasses into Ikebukuro, he is taken to Sugamo Prison and put on trial by Yama, who accuses him of using the Demon Summoning Program to control and force demons to fight for him, breaking the ancient agreement that humans were never to enslave demons. If the Hero is Law-aligned, Yama declares his actions are unforgivable and immediately sentences him to be executed the next day, then imprisons his party in a cell. If the Hero is Neutral-aligned, Yama will admit that the circumstances forced him into a position where it was necessary to use it, so Yama offers to pardon the Hero if he agrees to stop the completion of the Basilica, viewing it as a new symbol of tyranny. If the Hero refuses, Yama imprisons him. If imprisoned, the Hero's party manages to escape and can optionally return to Yama's judgment hall to confront him. Enraged that the Hero had the gall to return to him after breaking out of his cell, Yama attacks the party and is subsequently defeated.
If the Hero accepts Yama's deal, or if the Hero is Chaos-aligned, Yama will instead drop the charges and pardon him, as he is using the program to further the goals of Chaos, which allows the Hero to walk free without a fight.
Visionaries
Yama is featured in one Visionary cutscene in the Game Boy Advance and iOS versions of the game.
In "Yama's Book," Yama passes judgment on multiple people. The first person Yama judges is determined to have obstructed the freedom of others and harmed them, so Yama sentences him to five years of penal servitude. The next person Yama judges is a Messian man who murdered a demon. The Messian views nothing wrong with killing demons, but Yama reprimands him, declaring that demons have the right to live as well, so he sentences him to death for violating this right. Yama briefly wonders why he must continue judging others and comments on the Messians' increasing numbers. He figures it cannot be helped, however, and moves on to judge the next person.
In "Skull Flag," Yama judges Chaos Hero, who is being branded as a criminal for causing trouble for the former's forces and being a suspect in the murder of four demons. Yama states he has not been in keeping with the teachings of Chaos, but then becomes confused at his true nature, as he is a demon with the heart of a human, then figuring out that Chaos Hero fused with a demon without forming a contract with it, which is a crime punishable by death. Chaos Hero scoffs at the accusation, however, and justifies that the circumstances made it necessary. Seeing that he is being truthful and admiring his lust for power, Yama decides to pardon Chaos Hero and requests that he join the Chaotic army, offering him free rein to carry out orders, spend his free time, and use their forces however he wishes, which he accepts.
