Thoth is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Thoth was an Egyptian deity and the scribe of the gods. He was traditionally depicted as a man with the head of an ibis, though both ibises and baboons were considered his sacred animals. In the Hellenistic period, the Greeks identified him with their god Hermes, and the city where Thoth's chief temple was located was therefore called Hermopolis. A god of knowledge and magic, he was believed to be the inventor of the hieroglyphic writing system, astrology, civilisation, and various sciences, and was said to be the true author of all forms of knowledge. He was also connected to the underworld as an overseer, recording the results of judgement performed by Anubis and Maat. In the myth of Osiris, it is Thoth who provides Isis with the spell needed to revive her husband from the dead.

Design

Thoth appears as a white-furred baboon holding an open book on his lap. On his head is an ancient Egyptian symbol known as the moon disk, and the Eyes of Horus and Ra, additional important symbols, are shown on the front and back covers of his book. It also wears an ornate stole, with a gold rhombus design on the front and a turquoise teardrop design around the shoulders and back.

Game Appearances

Shin Megami Tensei if...

He appears in the Earth Nomos as a boss. If defeated, he will become available through fusion. The Protagonist can alternatively recruit him by approaching him while both Sebek and Hathor are in the Protagonist's party.

Shin Megami Tensei if...: Hazama Hen

He appears as a boss that can be fought by taking the monkey statue to a cathedral of shadows and releasing him. If defeated, he'll join Hazama's party.

He refers to Amon as lord Amon again after being defeated.
