Origin

Siddhārtha Gautama,[a] also known as Gautama Buddha,[b] Śākyamuni,[c] or simply the Buddha, was the founder of Buddhism. He was a prince of the Śākya clan who renounced his noble way of life to become an ascetic, and achieved enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree at Bodh Gayā.

釈迦 Shaka is the usual Japanese term for Gautama Buddha. This is a shortened form of 釈迦牟尼 Shakamuni, which derives (via a Chinese intermediate) from the Sanskrit शाक्यमुनि Śākyamuni, meaning "sage of the Śākya clan".
